The Browning Automatic Rifle, officially designated the M1918, was a sweet light machine gun designed by no less a firearms genius than John Moses Browning in the tail end of World War I. Capable of spitting out .30-06 rounds at 500-600 rounds per minute, the BAR could empty a 20-round detachable box magazine in just two seconds when wide open.

I would rather have an M14, but.....
The M1A is very close to me, like 6 feet close.
My weapon of choice any day.. Never got to shoot one.. That thing could toss a lot of lead quick.. Lugging ammo must have been a bugger tho. Need a pack mule..
I’ve shot the Browning...very hard to keep on target from a standing position...after first few shots on FA you are shooting the sky. Much better from proned out position.
Clear the Road!
Snapping in with a M14 in ‘72 at Edson was a very physical thing.. Lots of aches and pains.. But for simplicity and punch, they delivered..
Nothing has the same sound as a BAR on full auto. It’s like a Thompson sub — unique sound signature.
I’ll bump that, hell yeah!
Kirby on “Combat.”
I like the M14 also but in FA mode you get so much barrel rise that you can’t stay on target.
I might’ve sat in that same spot, snapping in in 1982 with the M16A1.
But here is what i think, its evolving into having counter fire power againsts others in areas of dense events like the concert hall, you cannot conceal a BAR, to me its more like whats best could be the Glock 23 with +2 mag extensions, and though i do not own one NOW..... i want a 5.7, 20 round mags, excellant penetration against light body armor if terrorists have them, which you must assume they will.
The training I went through with it we never fired it standing from the shoulder but one faze of qualification was firing from hip with a sling.
Firing prone with bipod it was deadly accurate even firing full auto. There was no selector switch for full auto or single but with trigger control firing single shots on the 500 yard KD range it was most accurate.
It was my favorite weapon though hefty, IIRC around 22 lbs w/bipod.
Bank robber Clyde Barrow’s favorite weapon was the BAR. Bank robbers liked to cut the stocks and barrels down to make them more portable.
I believe the unigue sound is due to both firing on forward movement of the bolt.
A good friend of mine recounted how he was trained as a medic but as soon as he arrived in Vietnam, his platoon sergeant handed him a BAR and corresponding ammo..........LOL!
Light weight?
Compared to what?
In your yout’, 22 pounds was nothing.. Add a couple bandeleros and a couple ammo boxes.. Whew..
I ended up in the Air wing side of things. air conditioned trailers for the electronics inside.. The only auto I got to fire was a 50 cal MG with tracers at night.
The Thompson has a heavy bolt and a .45 round, which makes a shorter, choppier sound.
Ma deuce? Lol!
