I’m jealous. Hickok45 has a circa 1919 full-auto Browning BAR that has been upgraded to World War II standards. It remains one of my two favorite machine guns of all time (the other is the late 1960s-early 1970s Smith & Wesson M76 9mm submachine gun).

For these two starry-eyed lovers, there was nothing that could interfere with their passionate lip-lock on Monday night -- even if that something was an armed robbery. As captured by surveillance cameras, the couple remained unfazed as they sit at the bar, wrapped in each others embrace, while three robbers approach the register.

Earlier today I visited one of my favorite bars (for a ginger ale). I live in a rust-belt state, a state that is considered Democrat, but one that went for Ronald Reagan back in the day. The talk turned to politics. The folks present were all blue-color types. And they love Trump! There is also some sympathy for Sanders. They see him as a well-meaning dreamer. But there is zero support for Hillary, and zero support for Cruz. Zero. Nada. None.

The Browning Automatic Rifle, officially designated the M1918, was a sweet light machine gun designed by no less a firearms genius than John Moses Browning in the tail end of World War I. Capable of spitting out .30-06 rounds at 500-600 rounds per minute, the BAR could empty a 20-round detachable box magazine in just two seconds when wide open.

World War I is often called “the machine gun war” because of the devastating use of automatic weapons such as the Maxim gun. It’s also when some of the drastic developments in machine gun technology occurred. Artillery fire actually killed more men than machine guns, but statistics simply don’t convey the horror of European armies on the Western Front facing automatic fire. For example, during just one day in 1916 at the Battle of the Somme the British lost 21,000 men – many of them killed by Spandau machine guns, the German version of the Maxim.

Greg and Jen Espinoza fly to Hawaii as often as they can. Their idea of the perfect vacation is sipping mai tais on a tropical island. But when they can’t get away they do the next best thing — they sail off to Pink Pearl’s Lagoon, right in their own backyard. Pearl’s is their personal tiki bar, a hangout for friends, family and neighbors, just beyond their sliding glass doors. Greg built it himself out of bamboo he picked up cheap years ago at the old Yardbirds’ going-out-of-business sale. Over the years they’ve added personal touches, like a Bourbon Street...

One thing that would be cool, if they could fix it, is to allow you to make the title bar real distinct. Win7, at least in my enterprise installation, doesn't let you. In Win 3.1, I could make a red-to-yellow gradient on the active window title bar, where it says the application program name or the file title. Then you could easily see which is the active window.

The Green Mill, in Chicago’s uptown neighborhood, is more than just a great jazz bar. It also has a lot of history. Bet he had an interesting day. As this year’s summer vacation begins, many parents contemplate how to rein in their kids. But there was a time when Americans pushed in the opposite direction, preserved in Mark Twain’s cat-swinging scamps. Parents back then encouraged kids to get some wildness out of their system, to express the republic’s revolutionary values. American children of the 19th century had a reputation. MARTINSBURG - Two men accused of causing the death of an innocent bystander killed during a July 20, 2008, shooting outside a local bar were indicted Wednesday by a Berkeley County grand jury on charges of felony murder, first-degree robbery and conspiracy to commit murder. Police surrounded a man’s house after one of his “friends” warned the cops that he might be suicidal. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your perspective) the guy was down the street at a bar watching the whole thing on TV. The mayor is calling it a very expensive ($75,000) hoax, but the cops are still investigating: Cops are referring to this operation as a “well-being check”. They apparently take these well-being checks pretty seriously:

From the outside, Boxers NYC looks like the kind of sports bar you might find in a suburban strip mall. Large windows reveal 14 flat-screen TVs, two pool tables, and a dartboard. Inside, men in suits sit atop vinyl-covered stools, fidget with their BlackBerrys (RIMM), and swill pints of beer—served by bartenders dressed in their underwear. After all, Boxers wasn't named for the sweet science, but for the style of skivvies its clients prefer. Less than a year after opening in Manhattan's Flatiron district, Boxers has become a pioneer of the gay sports bar movement. Equal parts generic pub and...

Tom Brokaw on Thursday said that as a result of Arizona's loose gun laws, he'd be nervous going into a bar or restaurant in that state on a Saturday night. Such was uttered during a discussion about gun control on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" (video follows with transcript and commentary): TOM BROKAW: Here is why I think there are a lot of Glocks being sold: because gun owners are worried that they're going to be outlawed. That's what happened when President Obama first took office is that people were buying ammunition and storing it in underground bunkers...

FORT WORTH – One of the busiest airports in the world will soon be a neighbor to an upscale gentlemen’s club, but some prominent North Texans are trying to shut it down before it even opens. A new Rick’s Cabaret is about to open near the South entrance to DFW International Airport. The problem for many is that it’s one of the first things you’ll see going to or from the airport. The club is expected to open its doors in a few weeks. Owners say their place is going to make the airport sexier. But for travelers at DFW,...

There aren’t a whole lot of things in politics about which anyone can claim: “This has never happened before!” But in Iowa, a major battle over judicial activism fits the bill. In all the years that Iowans have held to their odd, some would say cozy, system of appointing judges at all levels including the Supreme Court, a justice has never been voted off that court even though they all come up for a vote on a rotating basis. Each election cycle a few justices come up for retention, and in total they face the voters once every eight years....
