Imagine the message it would send to our allies if Canada now withdraws from the combat mission against the Islamic State. It would be a slap on the face to France. It would be an insult to the memory of the 128 people who were killed by the terrorist attacks.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau must reconsider his plans.
Trudeauâs first significant move as PM was to inform President Barack Obama that Canada would be withdrawing from the combat portion of the coalition against the Islamic State. On Friday, we learned Defence Minister Harjitt Sajjan's first orders from the PM were to make this his top priority.
But itâs not too late to reconsider. Not at all. Because we havenât even executed the plan yet. The mission continues. The last update of Operation Impact, from Nov. 11, explains that Canadaâs CF18s have so far undertaken 1109 bombing sorties against IS targets.
When a terror group has both the intent and capacity to attack their targets - which the Islamic State has now proven to be the case - it makes no sense to let them carry on, undisturbed.
Remember, the Islamic State has also named Canada as a desired target. Not only do we owe it to our allies to keep up our involvement, but we owe it to ourselves.
That said, itâs not like Canadians need convincing. Polls have shown a majority of Canadians support the mission. Even when you break the numbers down by party support, still a majority of Liberal, Conservative and NDP supporters said they supported the campaign. There is cross-partisan consensus on this.
While Trudeau campaigned on withdrawing from the fight, this pledge was far from the decisive issue the election was fought on and won on.
He wonât be breaking his trust with voters if he changes plans. Besides, the facts have now changed.
The Islamic State has orchestrated its biggest attack on Western soil. Attacking a cafe. Attacking a concert hall. A sports stadium. These arenât political or military targets. Theyâre parts of our daily life.
The IS statement claiming responsibility said Paris was the "capital of adultery and vice". They no doubt think a city like Toronto fits that description as well.
The note adds France "will remain at the top of the list of targets of the Islamic State."
President Francois Hollande called the attacks an "act of war". We need to stand with our NATO ally. Paris was under curfew for the first time since the German occupation. Let the implications of that sink in.
In his statement reacting to the horrible news, Trudeau said âwe will continue to work closely with the international community to help prevent these terrible, senseless acts.â
Does he mean weâll continue to contribute to the combat mission? Letâs hope so. Anything else sends a bad signal to our allies and an even worse one to our enemies.

Libtards don’t reconsider, they double down.
We could elect Carson, he’s a pacifist.

This is not a good time to be a liberal leader. The pendulum is swinging back with a vengeance. The Clinton broad is going to have to go all in waving the bloody shirt.
He doesn’t care; he’s only interested in himself — like his dad.
I’m surprised Kerry hasn’t flown there to ‘negotiate’ a cease fire between france and the terrorists BEFORE france goes after them
They only attack blue cities.
If they don’t care why should we?
Has the Sun thought that all through, or just reacted to recent one day's events?
Trudeau, he’s like 6 right?
Trudeau, who has vowed to pull out Canada's fighter jets from the U.S.-led bombing mission against ISIS in Iraq, was asked whether the events in Paris would cause him to reconsider his decision.
"It is still very early moments in figuring out what is indeed happening as we speak right now on the ground in France," Trudeau said. "It's too soon to jump to any conclusions."
Who knows what’s in the mind of the Sun?
What I can tell you is that the Toronto
Sun is a tabloid newspaper to the right
of the leftist major paper in the city,
the Toronto Star. Call the Sun Canada’s
version of the New York Post.
That Canadian soldier who was standing guard at a national monument not long ago might have some company if the country's new government drops the ball.
In this case, Hollande is a French socialist, a fellow traveler with Justin Trudeau, so while Trudeau would never follow an American rightwing nutcase cowboy, he might listen to a comrade.
Good God...my 9 year old great nephew can construct a more coherent sentence than that.Is English not this guy's first language?
It looks like it took a couple
of trips through Babelfish, doesn’t it?
I know that Canadian Prime Ministers basically have to speak in both English and French. If these words were originally spoken in French I guess that could explain it.
If not....yikes!
This was a huge attack - I wonder who Kerry has lined up to sing. James Taylor will not suffice. Best be someone big, like Bruce Springstein? Billy Joel? Wonder what he’s got up his sleeve.
That’s very insulting. He’s at least a teenager. Have you seen his dreamy eyes and his hair? Come on. You’re just jealous.
