Culture Rot: Donald Trump Is the Effect, Not the Cause

Culture Rot: Donald Trump Is the Effect, Not the Cause ANDREW MCCARTHY

A sick society breeds gutter politics. A few years back, I began reliving, in reverse, the most treasured part of my upbringing. On sunny summer Sundays, my son, age seven and falling in love with baseball, would curl up next to me on the couch to watch the game. The American ritual of a man passing on to his boy not just the national pastime but a cultural heritage; the odd bits of hard-knocks wisdom sprinkled around the infield-fly rule.

There was even symmetry across the decades: The Mets providing just enough drama to break your heart in the end. There was, however, a vexing intrusion on the ritual: the remote control. And not because we didn’t have a remote control for our black-and-white RCA TV set in the Bronx circa 1966; it was because we didn’t need a remote-control back then. And not because there were only six other channels, as opposed to today’s 600; it was because, as his wide-eyed seven-year-old was taking it all in, my dad wasn’t worried about having to switch off Viagra commercials between innings.

So what is the natural progression from turning the campus and pop culture over to Amerika-hating radicals, to the vigorous years-long media defense of Bill Clinton’s right to turn the White House into a cathouse, to the inability of a father to watch baseball with his young son at one o’clock on a Sunday afternoon without being ready to address erectile dysfunction? It is the cretinous Donald J. Trump campaign.

It is a political-debate dais, once the majestic lyceum of Lincoln and Douglas, on which a debauched near-septuagenarian touts his, shall we say, Trump Tower as a credential for the most important political office in the world.

I think this validates the assertion that Trump is a vulgarian. Folks are fed up of your bucket pics. Try to address the merits of the argument, not insult the messenger.

While Trump maybe, in the eyes of some people, a symbol of the cultural right of this society, there is another way to look at him: as someone who is leading a bloodless coup against an established tyranny. People who do things like that, against every possible form of attack I’m a bad publicity and condemnation, tend to have some rough edges. Trump falls solidly within that description, which should shock no one.

As for me, not only is it no shock, but I welcome him and most of his methods. Why? Because the elites in this country, in every place that they may be, need to know that they are not our masters, that they work for us. The message not only needs to be loud, but it needs to be so crystal clear in its nature that there is simply no ignoring it. If they don’t like it and will not change, then we will get rid of them. They should be thankful that it is a bloodless coup, because we generally don’t do things the other way in this country.

Imagine.

K- and J- Street offices having to clear out and for lease signs going up.

Lobby lawyers and other support staff having to close up shop.

THAT’s what I am looking for.

Imagine:

People bookin’ it for the border, with e-verify in every business location.

A decrease in 3rd world diseases in 1st world US K-12 schools.

THAT’s what I’m looking for.

Trump.

Sorry about a couple of errors: first, it is cultural rot, not “right.”

Second, it isn’t “against every possible form of attack I’m a bad publicity and condemnation,” it is “ against every possible form of attack, insult and condemnation.”

I mean, Ivanka is so hot that if she wasn’t my daughter, I’d probably be dating her? Whose mind works that way?

... a sick father, that's who's mind! He has already cheated numerous times and bragged about it openly.

But don't bother any Freeper/Trumpers with that fact... we are in the modern era here with no morals.... THE WALL... that is all.. THE WALL...and sending illegals home. ( oh that last point is already being negotiated... and won't happen)

Imagine:

1/2 of the “49% of tax filers pay ZERO federal income tax” group having to get AND FINDING a job. In the US. That pays enough to make bills.

Imagine:

Steel, shoe, sheet, jewelry, and TV plants IN THE US again.

Want a job, US working person?

Trump.

Cruz does sweat horribly.

How was that supposed to be dirty and/or crude?

National Review is nothing more than biased journalism not worthy of consideration.

By that logic, you will have to write off all of the mainstream media, Weekly Standard, National Review (the intellectual flag bearer of conservatism); the American Spectator (even though Trump supporter Jeffrey Lord’s is a contributing essayist); UNLESS of course its authors write articles supporting of Trump, or the NY Observer that is owned and operated by Donald’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner who had Trump’s daughter convert to Judaism, as a precondition of their marriage.

He's right.

But if cultural rot is the reason then all of us who participate in the culture bear some responsibility.

I wonder, though, if that's everything.

Movement conservatism has lost a lot of its appeal with the public -- even with conservatives.

That's something Andrew McCarthy and the rest of the NR crew need to address.

National Review (the intellectual flag bearer of conservatism)

You're not serious with that comment are you? National Review is a joke.

The fact that you think NR is currently a standard bearer of conservatism makes me question your mental state

Sadly, Trump’s conservative supporters have turned on Rush, Mark Levin, NR, William Buckley (who despised Trump), Fox News, etc. — they are all RINOs, wrong, ‘sell-outs’, ‘betrayers’, etc. Donald Trump is one who is needed now. The ‘ball-crusher.’ The purported Strong Man. The one who quotes Mussolini (who forgot or never knew Mussolini ended up a sheep.) Who now is showing he is really the RINO-est of them all.
