CROW AGENCY, Mont. — The last Crow war chief entered the log-cabin trading post at the edge of the Little Bighorn Battlefield just after noon on a Sunday, supported by his son on his left and a cane held firmly in his right hand.

Often, at tribal events such as powwows, he’ll swing his cane overhead in celebration. But on this October afternoon, with wind sweeping across the stretch of southern Montana that’s home to the Crows, the cane simply supported the centenarian — Dr. Joseph Medicine Crow in English or High Bird, his traditional name, in Crow.

There's a fascinating article about the old gent on Wikipedia. Among other things, he's a WW II vet. It was during WW II that he completed all four tasks required to become a war chief.

Joe Medicine Crow

*Has he publicly endorsed Fauxcohauntas for president?*

I think she claimed to be a Cherokee, not a Crow.

I also believe that there is significant animosity between the various Native American ancestries.

For example, I think they all hate the Sioux.

that is true grew up in Montana in the 70s and a lot of the tribal people that lived on the reservation were angry with non Indians but a lot of times they were even more hostile to a particular tribe. I remember one native American telling me of his animosity for black foot Indians because that tribe raided all the other tribes and had held a relative in slavery. don’t look at native culture as one culture it is a lot of rich cultures and is as varied as different European cultures.

I just read the article. Dude was a Grade-A, government-inspected badass.

The four things one had to do to become a war chief:
1) Touch an enemy without killing them
2) Disarm an enemy and take their weapon
3) Lead a successful war party
4) Steal an enemy’s horse.

He did all those things. He stole the horse from a battalion of German officers and, as he rode away, he sang a Crow honor song.

That there is what you call a MAN.

Chief Joseph would have made it to Canada had it not been for the Crow that were leading the US Army in pursuit. The Crow turned on the Nez Pierce, the Cheyenne, and the Lakota. He is to respected as an American Indian and a Crow but the other tribes still have animosity towards the Crow for turning their back upon their own kind and helping the US Army.
