The Unbearable Whiteness of Baseball
NY Times ^ | April 6, 2016 | Jay Caspian Kang

y instinct, honed reflex and general contrarianism, I root for all “flashy” “showboats” who are “disgraces to the game.” It has been this way since I left Boston at age 10 to move to North Carolina, a state with no notable baseball team save the minor-league Durham Bulls, who, at least when I was growing up, seemed more a Hollywood relic than a ball club. Freed from having to like the Red Sox, I began to root for Rickey Henderson of the Oakland Athletics, mostly because I liked how deeply he squatted while taking a lead off first base. He seemed as if he were taunting the pitcher. As I grew older and started feeling alienated from my white classmates, I gravitated toward athletes who, in some way, flouted the white, stoic traditions of American sports — Allen Iverson, Ken Griffey Jr., Rasheed Wallace, Pedro Martinez. I felt as if this was a moral choice.

I don’t know who this kid is, but he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. African-American players may only be at 8 percent, but black players make up a whole lot more than 8 percent.

Exactly, and in 2012, the Hispanic representation was 27%. The author must come to understand not every sports team is destined to look like the Harlem Globetrotters.

C.S. Lewis had 'em pegged... "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." ― C.S. Lewis

Kang, no one is forcing you to live in the same world with people who don’t look like you. When you look at baseball, you are looking at a sport segregated from the larger society by skill. When you refuse to leave your hood because you don’t want to feel uncomfortable, you get the things that come with voluntary segregation.

Isn’t baseball known as “the thinking man’s sport”?

You need ballplayers to play ball...

black players are drawn to basketball because you only need 5 players...

baseball doesn’t come across go on TV..even among whites

But a really big reason is that life has become sooooooooo dangerous in the areas where many black children live....kids and their parents are afraid for them to go outside, for legitimate reasons...even to play basketball...many of the thugs take over the playgrounds and what hoops there are...

just some dipsh** could care-less author trying to make himself less irrelevant

Here again. I could be wrong, but I remember Roberto Clemente and I don’t recall ever hearing him referred to as anything but Roberto.

Same here! I doubt if this idiot was even alive when Clemente was

The racism against whites, by whites, had become an epidemic of outright lies, hypocrisy and cowardice.

Yep, it's just like the concept of self-loathing jews. Those sort of people feel guilty for breathing.

Last year, black players made up just over 8 percent of big-league rosters, down more than 50 percent from 1981.

The author excludes Black Latinos. There is more diversity in baseball than there is in the NFL or the NBA. Whites, blacks of all ethnic groups, and Asians abound in baseball. Just some more racist crap from the NYT.

This is such a stupid article. Blacks are well represented in baseball, almost equal to their general population numbers. Tell Dusty Baker that he’s playing in a racist game. I’d like to hear what he has to say about it.

Yeah, I’m glad he joined the Giants’ lineup. He’s a great addition!
