"Seven Nation Army" - heavy metal White Stripes cover, by Yours Truly
Me, via YouTube ^ | 6/27/16 | Me, as "Hopalong Ginsberg"

This song started as a sample tune with which to play with production techniques. It damn sure didn't finish that way.

Video created by MVGEN.com. Check it out - it's amazing!

Well, I gave it a like but it's not my kind of music. Tell me, is it in E maj then switches to D maj for awhile? I'm tryin' to learn to play by ear.

That melody is easy enough to pick out even on a virtual keyboard I found. But that's the best I can do with it at this point. It's just the same notes in a loop. Just need some simple rhythm in the base in 4.4 maybe?

The song is in E minor 4/4; I transposed it down to D minor to give it a bassier feel. But yes, except for the prechorus (and a minor variation during the chorus), it’s same riff for the entire song.

There are plenty of tabs available on the Web, should you want to go that route.

Interesting ideas. My next song will probably be country, but after that...?

Thank you so much, hope I'm not being a pest.

Maybe I got it wrong then, for sure about minor, bad guess, have to hear the tones better plus one video said most pop, soul, etc., are in minor.

But was I wrong? I thought it started in E at first, then did a chord change into D.

The song doesn’t really use chords per se - the main guitar riff is D-D-F-D-C-Bb-A (in my version; a full step higher for each note in the original), with the bass tracking it two octaves below.

Nice.

My kids just started a week camp at school of rock. This is one of the songs they're going to be attempting, along with....wait for it....

Immigrant Song!!

Among a couple others. :)

Thanks. I was wrong altogether. But I've got it with your help. Once I have the starting note in the melody it's not a complicated one and I can find your notes by ear. I wouldn't have been able to duplicate the bass. Yet.

Now at 1:59 it changes. Three walkup notes (each one repeating 4X) in bass to A A C A G F E on top. That's what it sounds like to me. Now that's enough for tonight.

I am watching videos of how to play keyboards and by ear.

Ah, this I can explain. In the chorus the single-note riff is replaced with root-fifth chords, or 5 chords; e.g, D becomes D5, some combination of the notes D and A. Varying from the original, I put the 5th of the chord as the lowest note; e.g., for D I used A-D-A. You’re probably hearing that low A.

Ok, I have been doing some major upgrades to my computer and am having to "fix" things which is a royal pain.

I'm glad I read some of this again because last night I played from a different video for Seven Nation Army White Stripes. I thought I heard a half step between the last two notes in your "riff" (new term for me). I'm sure I heard a half step.

Evidently you knew that and changed it to the full step which works better.

Maybe I will get my keyboard checked and try some of the tips on yt for playing by ear. A familiar melody I can pick out the right hand pretty accurately (not a really tricky one like um Dances with Wolves). I just didn't know what chords to put with it on the bottom.

And I learned all my chords years ago, including the more advanced ones, but can't play inversions and variations quickly. So I am working on the circle of chords and progressions and will see if I can pick up some more. Even if i am old, maybe I can still learn a little more.

Yeah maybe I can pick out most of Dances with Wolves. I have the music with guitar chords for that and other favs so can fall back on them. I just never liked the piano arrangements on pop music or even traditional music, too blocky and blah. But my ability to play well using the hymn books, etc., I do miss way to many notes, sight reading it's called. I always had to practice.

Way more than you wanted to know lol.
