Dutch Olympic medalist Adelinde Cornelissen has been forced to withdraw her dressage horse from the Rio games after it contracted a toxic fever.

Cornelissen said the problem with Parzival, a 19-year-old Jazz gelding who won individual silver and team bronze at London 2012, was believed to stem from a bite from a mosquito or a spider.

She retired from the competition after just a handful of movements.

Cornelissen said the fever started the day before the event began when the horse had a fever of over 40 degrees.

'When I came into the stable he had a swollen cheek, and we think he had been bitten by a spider or a mosquito,' Cornelissen said.

Not only do the athletes have to compete at this Olympics, they have to worry about getting out of Brazil alive or in one piece.

Poor horse.

Don’t riders usually have reserve horses if something happens? Or at least, might get to use another team member’s horse? (OK, I know in dressage especially the dynamics of the team can be messed up, but still....)

What happened to that alleged sickly swimmer? And the other stories about green pools?

Just wait and see, some Islamic country will win the bid for Olympics, a total sharia ceremony. With muslim special events of which i will not mention.

OMG, what a totally GORGEOUS horse. Just a dream. Look at his grace, even in a still shot. I’d love to see him in action when he’s well.

Here is a video of Parzival and Adelinde in competition in 2010. They are a wonder of grace and complete integration.

Remember when we were all warned VEE (Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis) was heading to the USA through mosquito bites fifty years ago? It hit, a few people got sick then it passed.
