High schooler Sydney McLaughlin makes her Olympic debut
Sydney McLaughlin, who just celebrated her 17th birthday eight days ago, made her Olympic debut, finishing fifth in her heat of the 400m hurdles. McLaughlin made it through to the semifinals on time.

I was cheering for her. Here’s hoping she has a couple of great runs left in her.
The 400 meter hurdles is considered the toughest event in track.
My daughter actually attends Union Catholic. Sydney acts like a regular kid around the school and doesn’t really like too much attention. The reason she didn’t attend the opening ceremonies was because she wanted to spend her birthday with her friends. A good kid with good parents! Hope she makes the finals.
does she have a realistic chance for a medal?..she looks tall...
Why is there no Summer Olympic analog of the Biathlon?
They were saying she is currently ranked 7th in the world and has a chance at a medal because her best time should be enough against the competition. In other words if she can make the finals and run her best race the odds are she would medal.
Looks like a great talent.
But why do parents these days give their daughters men’s names?
Sydney is female, Sidney is Male
Shannon is both male and female
For one, we did it to prevent any sort of gender bias on job hunting. Our daughter Sam(antha) gets more interviews with her resume using Sam than Samantha.
My mother wanted to name me Sydney 78 years ago. My grandfather scoffed, as he rose from his death bed on his elbow, “Sydney! I had a horse named Sydney. Name her after my mother, Elizabeth.” And so, I was named Elizabeth, but mom refused to call me that.
I read interviews where she stated she would happy to just make the 400 hurdle finals. She doesn’t seem to be concerned about medalling, which I think is the correct approach.
