Why Spanking Does Not Work | Elizabeth Gershoff and Stefan Molyneux
YouTube ^ | Published on You Tube on September 3, 2016 | Stefan Molyneux

New studies have failed to find even a single positive benefit to spanking children and a near endless amount of horrible effects. Dr. Elizabeth Gershoff joins Stefan Molyneux to discuss her latest study, refuting the common pro-spanking arguments, why social justice warriors have nothing to do with less aggressive parenting, associating love with physical abuse and ending the escalating cycle of violence in relationships.

Dr. Elizabeth Gershoff is a developmental psychologist, in addition to being a Faculty Research Associate and Associate Professor of Human Development and Family Sciences at University of Texas at Austin. She recently published a revolutionary new study called “Spanking and Child Outcomes: Old Controversies and New Meta-Analyses.”

Why would anyone watch a video when its title is a clear contradiction of God’s word.

Might I ask, have you read the Bible? If so, why would you promote a view that contradicts it?

Of course not, the title is enough. Most of us have enough life experience to be able to judge for ourselves. And yes, if we’re honest, decent, polite, well-adjusted people, why shouldn’t we think that’s how civilized people should act?

BTW: What points in the video (which you haven’t watched) are in error, and why?

What points do you consider dispositive of spanking, and why?

Yes, I’ve accepted Jesus Christ as my personal saviour, and I don’t agree with the other interpretation of what the “rod” symbolizes. I have other Christian friends who were raised similarly. Is it bad my parents explained it to me this way??

Since neither person in the video is a liberal, who are you talking about?

You haven’t watched the video, have you?

Proverbs 13:24 warns against sparing the rod.

Have you watched the video?

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence...far more than a Molyneux video can account for.

My opinion is irrelevant, and you are trying to create a diversion.

If you disagree with something in the video, it is incumbent on you to show why the woman is in error.

I am not going to speak against your parents. I think the Bible verses are clear. They are not difficult prophetic bits. That we might understandably differ in the interpretation of. The very plain, direct verses are posted in the comments above, easily read.

Not reading a single word of that. It worked on me and I see it working on many kids.

As a young person I had many opportunities to work with extremely difficult children. While in college I filled in for a friend at her regular baby sitting job - it was for a family in North Oaks (gated community) so I was super excited to watch kids without lots of labels and in a lovely home. The mom mentioned that they didn’t believe in spanking. They were the worst kids I had ever watched, not malicious or conniving; they just acted like little barbarians. They ruined my shirt by stretching and pulling it as they climbed on me and fought for attention, they ignored any direction they didn’t like. I was flabbergasted as I had never seen such disrespect. I left knowing that I would some day spank my future children if the situation required it.

I’m happy to say that over the years we have had our kids’ teachers, coaches and employers make a point of telling us how much they enjoy our kids-they are respectful and do what is asked. I’m not a fan of spanking and think it is rarely the most effective option-but there are times when stubborn defiance needs it. Otherwise you end up with barbarians.

If you can’t see how simple, direct and clear those statements are I doubt I can improve upon them. They are God’s inspired word, after all.

This is what “I” believe the bible means about the sins of the father being visited upon his children If a father neglects to teach his children (a sin); this sin is passed down the generations. Such as a father who neglects to teach his children basic responsible behavior or how to care for their animals.

Spanking is a valuable way to instruct children on what acceptable behavior is and is not. Somehow mankind did not have the problems we face today, when spankings were commonplace.

Nevertheless, Molyneux IS subject to the same errors of pride common to mankind. He considers his inability to find temporal proofs in the Bible to be dispositive of a deity outside of time. HOW he makes such a claim is untenable as there are literally hundreds of verifiable prophetic utterances in the Bible.

Sparky, that's an unfairly insinuating, strawman question. I never heard of anybody doing that, and I've been around and watching pretty closely for a long time.

If anybody DID threaten children in such a way, they would be very much in the wrong. Appallingly so.

It is to them that I would apply this tagline:

No, it isn't.

I'm not the one making the extraordinary claim. As one representing her view, it is incumbent on YOU to do so.

The notion that beating people repeatedly is okay, provided they are too small to defend themselves, is clearly an anti-civilizational idea.

If your spanking turns into or is "beating" your child, then you're already doing it wrong.

Let me guess. If a man waves the Bible in the air, he’s a good, holy, honest man, and you refuse to listen to anyone who calls him Lyin’ Ted.
