FULL TITLE: Farewell to a hero: Former astronaut John Glenn - the first American man to orbit the earth - dies aged 95
Former senator John Glenn, a war hero who went on to become the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth, has passed away at the age of 95.
Glenn passed away on Thursday afternoon surrounded by family at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, over a week after he was first hospitalized for an unknown illness.
Glenn is survived by his wife of 73 years, Annie; his son John Glenn Jr.; his daughter Carolyn; and his grandchildren.

Sorry, no sadness here. He rode the same pony as John McCain. The idea that one’s early military accomplishments allows one to be totally dickish as a representative of their constituents, because of some imagined special dispensation.

John Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth, not the first man. I believe that distinction (first man in space and first to orbit the earth) belongs to Russian Yuri Gagarin...
John Glenn was an accomplished exemplar as a space aviator and a total bootlicker as a senator, he used his self-proclaimed “heroism” (rooted in fact, but still it was self-proclaimed on numerous occasions) to be the front man for every nut left agenda item in the Senate.
In 1998 I walked up to John Glenn and told him that his bumping off someone else who had trained so hard and so long for STS-95 was chicken shit.
He was not pleased.
I still remember watching John Glenn take off on an old grainy B&W TV, I was 6 years old and home sick with the measles, and got to see him lift off.
At the time, I thought he was the first man in space, I found out years later he was preceded by a Russian. Watching the splash down hours later was tense...
John Glenn should have stuck with being a Space Ace and left politics well enough alone I agree.

Alright, I’m gonna renege on #14 because of the number of people talking about what kind of guy he was (good and bad).
The thing about John Glenn is that he was softly fired by NASA. He “resigned” from NASA in 1964 after being told that his psychological profile showed that he was more suited for public life. Translation: “Your fellow astronauts can’t stand you and won’t work with you. You’re one-and-done on spaceflights. You can hang around and be an ‘astronaut’ if you want but you’re never going up again.”
He actually did go into space on a shuttle flight but that was a total crock. It was a political payoff for killing an investigation into Bill Clinton’s many ethics failings. Glenn did not have a legitimate job on the mission, he sat there wired up to have hit vital signs measures as a study on geriatric people in space. I think it sucks that he bumped a qualified astronaut for this political stupidity. I remember all the media fanfare behind the whole “John Glenn: Return to Space”, don’t make me vomit. It was as much a crock as Sen. Jake Garn, another geezer passenger that had no business bumping a legitimate astronaut with a legitimate job. It’s a travesty that NASA allowed passengers aboard space shuttle flights for political reasons. It is sleazy crap.
I admire John Glenn for being a combat pilot and risking his life and going up in an Atlas rocket that had a downright scary safety record. Beyond that, I respect nothing about him.
I appreciate the astronauting but no one with that voting record can called a hero, or anything close to it. I’ll leave it at that.

I didn't know that, or that he was "fired" from NASA. Very informative.
As I told someone else, when Glenn deliberately ran out the clock on the ChinaGate investigation (the price for getting his little shuttle ride), it truly changed Sen. Fred Thompson’s view of DC, Democrat partisanship, and this “beloved” Senator (he being chairman of that aforementioned committee Glenn filibustered on).
When the media went to the gentlemanly Thompson to get a puff piece sound byte for Glenn when he was retiring, Thompson told them what he had to say about Johnny could not be aired on a family-friendly network. Words like “traitor” and “treason” come to mind. It was ChinaGate investigation that the Clintoons feared the most, why they pinned all their hopes to the Lewinsky nonsense to distract the public away from their real crime of selling nuclear secrets to the Red Chinese in exchange for laundered campaign contributions. I hope Justice takes a good look at this under President Trump.
