Diet soda contains chemicals found in rust remover
NY Post ^ | 1/10/2017 | Christina Earle

Rust remover, anyone? Or maybe a dash of cement with your meal?

Swapping your “full-fat” Coke for a diet alternative might seem like the sensible, healthy thing to do. But think again.

Last week, experts at Imperial College, London claimed sugar-free drinks won’t help you lose weight or avoid Type-2 diabetes.

In fact, they could stimulate your appetite and make you gain weight.

And worse, some sugar-free soda has ingredients you wouldn’t usually dream of consuming — chemicals found in rust remover, steel cleaner, and cement, albeit in tiny quantities.

They also have ingredients that in high doses have been linked to DNA damage, hyperactivity, and bone fractures.

Dr. Marilyn Glenville, author of “The Natural Alternative To Sugar,” says: “We don’t know the chemical cocktail effect of these ingredients.

“Some negatively affect health. Women and girls who regularly drink these drinks increase their risk of osteoporosis in later life.”

“There is also a lot of research showing artificially sweetened drinks promote weight gain and affect gut bacteria levels.”

When I was a kid, something like Coke or Pepsi was good on a hot day, and really quenched your thirst. It just wasn’t the same later; maybe the corn syrup ruined it.

The fizz can be had by drinking seltzer.

I don’t like water. I can drink it if it has lemon or lime in it but I would still rather have something else. I’m with you on the purists who are water snobs.

These people are crazy. I always have a Snickers with my Diet Coke, which cancels out the Snickers calories. I thought everyone knew that. /s

I’m not understanding ‘full fat’ - there’s no fat in regular or diet soda

Nope, no fat. My guess is that the author thinks sugar is fat, or makes you fat, or something.

I never used to drink diet soda, but now it's the only one I'll touch, for the same reasons as you (unless it's with Jack Daniels or a good rum). My wife tried diet soda once and thinks I'm nuts.

The only difference between “natural food” and “artificial food” is the ingredients list.

Wonder if she knows that lemon juice can cause you to get really bad sunburns.

I remember back in 1961 when we moved into a rental house and my dad found a bottle of saccharin tablets. He popped one in his mouth expecting a burst of sweetness, instead he almost threw up and ran to the sink and spit it out! BITTER!
It is so bitter it fools the mind into thinking it is sweet.

Then there was the time mom found some IDEAL liquorice and broke off a piece. We heard her scream clear in the other room. Real bitter with no sugar.
Then the time I sneaked into the kitchen and stole a piece of unsweet chocolate. Never again!
I can no longer stand sugar free sodas!

I actually have one of these sitting in my kitchen:

It's loaded up with mountain dew, diet mountain dew, and beer. I'm gonna go pull one out in celebration of this thread.

I will give water a shot of lemon or lime juice.

Over the past few years I’ve gotten better about drinking water and cutting the sodas. Overall I feel better.

One of my morning mixtures is chia seeds, maca powder and a bit of Tang OJ powder for some sweetness.

I could never stand diet anything. They all tasted horrible. For whatever reason I can’t stand the taste of alcohol or coffee.

That lemon juice an be dangerous stuff..:^)

The same natural foods that the chemicalphobes tout as being "healthier" contain all sorts of dangerous chemicals, but only in trace amounts. As it has always been, the dosage makes the poison..
