Making New York’s Airports Great Again
City Journal ^ | January 27, 2017 | John Tierney

Posted on 01/27/2017 6:40:42 AM PST by C19fan

For once, Donald Trump was guilty of understatement. “Our airports are like from a Third World country,” he complained during the first presidential debate, describing the experience of landing in New York. He was echoing a common complaint—Vice President Joseph Biden had previously used “Third World” to describe La Guardia—but Trump wasn’t adequately diagnosing the problem. Comparing New York’s airports with the Third World’s is unfair to the Third World.

Freepers mentions LGA stands for La Garbage.

I had to fly into JFK about ten years ago (my first trip to ever use the airport). I stepped off the plane and this big huge mildew smell hit me. Whole place had the appearance of some third-world customs hallway. After messing around with cancelled flights (summer thunderstorm at 3PM in the afternoon)...I made up my mind never to transit JFK ever again.

I landed in La Guardia after a southern cruise, so had to go through immigration and customs. Several hundred of us stood for over 45 minutes in an underground hallway because...I don’t have a clue why. When we managed to be led out of the tunnel, we came into a room where we waited another hour to go through customs. No wonder so many prefer to avoid all of this and to enter the country on foot from the south.

A few terminals at JFK—notably JetBlue’s new terminal and Delta’s terminal renovations—are actually very nice. Most of the rest is terrible, though the International Terminal is undergoing long-needed renovations.

I was amazed at how nice the subways and airports were in China when I visited there in 2013.

Part of it is that he who builds last builds best.

Even at the homeowner level, everybody knows that it’s a lot easier to build new than to rip out and redo.

Compared to Atlanta and Houston, Narita is superb. Tân Sơn Nhất is a slicker, smoother airport. Attitudes are infinitely better. Everybody at TSN seems to have an attitude of 'lets get you through here quickly.'

But Deblasio would rather pay for illegal alien welfare and lawsuits than have the Feds make NYC airports great again.

Dangling shiny new airports at New Yorkers will have mayor commie caving pretty quick.

“It’s hard to imagine this ever occurring in New York because the Port Authority would be loath to surrender its airport-monopoly profits.”

Many years ago during a discussion about politics with a boyhood mentor of mine about power politics, he pointed out this hierarchy:

First comes the PA director (Tobin at that time), then comes God, then comes the President. He correctly noted to me that the PAofNY was the most powerful body in the area due to its autonomy. I guess after reading this, his opinion, except for God, was validated.

Try building an airport today. If the EPA doesn’t lock you down than some eco-nazi group will. Trump can change regs that keeping folks from building/improving.

LGA is disgusting. Actually, getting there is even worse. Coming from Jersey, by the time you drive over the GWB, Deegan, TriBoro and Grand Central, you are down a pair of struts, $15 and no place to park. It’s a disgusting all around trip.

The best two terminals i have seen are, in America, Orlando.

Abroad, Brisbane Australia.

I thought JFK was bad until I had a layover at LaGuardia.

I have no intention of ever going to the East Coast, so I won't ever have to deal with NYC airports. I'll just consider myself to be very lucky. I will say that Anchorage International is pretty easy to deal with. SeaTac is also easy if you're just transiting. I've always just passed through, so no idea what it's like to originate or terminate there. I also use Tucson, which is really fast to get in and out of. The big thing is, use PreCheck. It gets you through the lines much faster.

I think SFO is okay. Summertime weather, though, can make departures risky. Foggy conditions are common. Baltimore is good. Chicago and Denver are good for layovers, although that’s all I’ve ever done there.

Portland, Or is good for arrivals and layovers, but bad for departures. TSA people very lazy. In Oregon, I always go to Eugene for departures. Smaller regional airport, rarely more than two flights departing per hour.

Not too interested at the moment though i would like very much to visit DisneySea in Tokyo.

But while on the subject of terminals i have to admit Brisbane was very very nice, Sydney International was quick but dated, the domestic side was horrendous!

Honolulu was interestinn to say the least if you are arriving from other than the US. Intense scrutiny!

In summary my only flights in the last decade were one trip to Sacramento from Anchorage, family emergency and a 5 week vacation a year ago in Oz flying from Anchorage to Honolulu.

Did not see any part of the island though. Its been the TSA stormtroopers that has kept me from flying more often.

Hopefully President Trump will address these issues, i believe he can.

Same here the ONLY place i would head east would be Florida, im actually dreading a trip next month to Minniapolis for a certification course, as much as i hate our long winters in Alaska i have no enthusiasm for the cold clammy dreary winter midwest.

Why would the FedGov be involved in an airport like these? Military airports or ones in DC are about all they should be doing.
