Republican Gov. John Kasich repeated his belief in the importance of the free press Wednesday as tensions between the media and the administration of President Donald Trump remain high.

The former congressman and 2016 presidential contender declined to directly take on Trump, who he refused to endorse, campaign with or vote for last year, while speaking to editors and publishers convened by the Ohio Newspaper Association.

But Kasich said he wanted to see the industry survive and thrive.

“I’d like to stand for all of you, for all of you who have real content, for all of you who’ve decided in a really crazy, changing world that your point of view, your editorials, your writings, your articles are critically important,” Kasich said. …

I’m surprised there still is such a thing as the Ohio Newspaper Association. Be honest with them, Gov. Tell them they need to face that the newspapers are never coming back to that same level of influence. Time to downsize, like all the way down to a skeleton crew and an efficient collection of graphic computers.

... so I strongly suggest you stop editorializing and start reporting. You would at least have a fighting chance to survive if you do.

Unfortunately, John 90% of them want to feel it is “critically important” to selectively report the news and write “points of view” that are intended to manipulate the electorate in a leftward way. But I guess that a Soros funded POS posing as a conservative doesn’t get that.

And very few people even read the paper anymore. The average person watches early AM news, checks weather and road conditions, then is off to work. Many only buy a Sunday paper for the sales. Newspapers are not very important these days to most people.

“freedom of the press” in the first amendment applies to all of us. In those days if you wanted to blog you had to use a printing press. It was expensive for common folk so sadly news paper companies naturally had a louder voice. These days the freedom of the press is far greater. Bye bye news papers. Hello freedom of the press.

I see the equivalent in some community websites.

Very hard to make a buck that way. Maybe some inventive person will find a way.

In the early republic, it did not take a great deal of capital to start a newspaper. There were lots of them, and significant freedom of the press.

Printers of papers were partisan, everyone knew it and took it into account. It lasted about a hundred years.

As it grew more and more expensive to enter the market, and as the news industry centralized, we ended up with the Mediacracy. It lasted about a hundred years.

Now we are moving back to media that is easy to enter, and a partisan media. It is a better place. I have no idea how long it will last.

Not when you read books like The Naked Communist and The Conscience of a Conservative; then the only thing that surprises you is how long stuff like that has been going on.

Calling Kasich a “2016 presidential contender” is a freaking joke. That’s like calling the Cleveland Browns, Super Bowl contenders. It may be factually correct, but realistically it is a joke
