ANAHEIM – A half-century ago today, Pirates of the Caribbean opened at Disneyland with great fanfare, and Ron Hanford was there.

“It lived up to everything,” he recalled, now 71 and living in Rancho Cucamonga.

This week, like so so many times over the years, he was back enjoying Disneyland – and Pirates...

It was the last attraction overseen by Walt Disney, opening three months after his death. What is now a 15-minute journey in a boat that bobs past fireflies, pirates firing off cannons, drinking pirates and those trying to escape a jail cell – with that catchy tune as a backdrop much of the way – was originally going to be a walk-through wax museum...

I was at Disney World a couple of months ago, and rode the Pirates of the Carribean.

I must say, I was really surprised to see this was still part of the ride.

I was in VA (DC Metro area) when it opened. I don’t think I visited until ‘58. I enjoyed it. It wasn’t a Mickey Mouse experience. They opened up a bunch of new attractions in ‘59.

I’ve often wondered, why the feminist types have never made big protests about this “Take a Wench for a bride” at Pirates of the Caribbean.

Holy smokes, girls lined up, chained up, being sold to a pirate, for God knows what he will do to her???? Can’t believe it’s still part of the ride either, in this day and age..........

Pirates of the Caribbean came about when Walt Disney rode the Speelunker Cave at Six Flags Over Texas and knew he had to top it. When Warner Brothers bought Six Flags, they ripped out the heart of the Speelunker Cave and turned it into a soulless Bugs Bunny ride.

I had a friend who was describing the way the animatronic pirates would chase the animatronic booty around, and he sang:

Yo-Ho Ho!
It’s a Pirate’s Life For Me!
Drop the Drawers
And give her the oar
Be back on the the deck by Three! Oh, Yo-Ho Ho...

“I’ve often wondered, why the feminist types have never made big protests about this “Take a Wench for a bride” at Pirates of the Caribbean.”

Probably for the same reason why the feminist types declared Hugh Hefner a defender of women, or why they not only made big protests against Bill Clinton’s actions but if anything silenced ANY attempt at calling him out for his crap towards women. Or heck, why the feminists had no problem using a woman who acted as a procuress for her boyfriend Sartre and practically raped various women and men and abused them alongside him as a role model.

I remember when it opened - it was FAR better, much slower - the ride is definitely rushed now, much faster.

It’s also been PC’d a bit - some of the characters changed lest they offend someone.

Also love to eat at the Blue Bayou restaurant that’s inside the attraction - tried to get reservations last time I was there and they were sold out for the day.

I first saw “Pirates of the Caribbean” at Disneyland in April, 1972.

If I recall, there was a chubby woman chasing a bearded skinny pirate who had a scared look on his face.
