Two teenage girls were posing for selfies when they were killed by a plane in Mexico earlier this week, according to media reports.
El Diario de Chihuahua said Monday that Nitzia Mendoza Corral, 18, and Clarissa Morquecho Miranda, 17, were hit while standing on the plane's landing strip after leaving a horse race March 26 in Chínipas, Chihuahua.
The publication reported that the pair could not hear the plane coming because nearby horse races were so loud. The teens were hit in the head by one of the plane's wings, according to the outlet.
On Facebook, a woman who appears to be Corral's mother thanked friends and family for the outpouring of support and prayers.
A video shows a group honoring Corral, who Proseco reported was in her second semester at college studying law, with live music and flowers. Proseco, a Mexican publication, reported that Miranda was still in high school.
People are dying for the perfect selfie. A new study Me, Myself and My Killfie: Characterizing and Preventing Selfie Deaths found 127 people died in a 29-month span through September trying to get photos of themselves at dangerous or exotic locations. Researchers found the overwhelming majority of the deaths occurred in India, where 76 people died. In the United States, there were eight selfie-related deaths. The most common factor behind the so-called selfie deaths was a fall from an elevated location like buildings or mountains. Deaths involving both elevation and water were next, followed by fatalities involving trains, according to researchers from Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania and two colleges in India. My sympathy meter is broken for this one. Darwin award. All of these deaths from selfies....Darwin award.
If you’re doing a selffie on train tracks, be sure to use a wide-angle setting so that the train is closer than it appears.
Is it not possible to translate the phrase “Active Runway” to ye old Espanol?
¡Mantener mi cerveza y mira esto!
Selfie snuffies?
Hmmm...
‘North by Northwest’
Chínipas, Chihuahua I found the runway on google earth, but i don’t see any horse race track...
No worries of them “immigrating” to the U.S. and having anchor babies now.
Hmm. Females age 17 and 18 in Mexico, something tells me they have a good chance of no longer being eligible for Darwin Awards...
Proud to say I've never taken a selfie.
Runway incursion meets teenage girls.
What could go wrong ?
My sympathy meter is just broken. Almost all things, good or bad, happen to people because of decisions they made for themselves.

It troubles me the lack of sympathy for two kids. The article states they couldn’t hear the plane. Who cares why. If they were taking selfies of themselves to capture the incoming plane you might argue “they had it coming” because the plane would be getting huge in their viewfinder. But if the article is accurate that isn’t what they were doing.
It sounds to me they were kids being kids, and having been to Mexico and knowing they don’t know the first thing about safety I don’t blame the kids at all. A rural airstrip is not the tarmac at JFK.
The mother is a saint and prayers for the souls of the girls.
At least it wasn't the propellers.
Guffaw! Snort, howl, snigger, chortle!
Brings to mind that awful videotape of a serviceman getting sucked up into a jet turbine. I can’t imagine the terror. That two or three seconds was likely an eternity to him, so it didn’t happen quick from his perspective even if it did from ours.
