Feudalism would be a SERIOUS upgrade over either. I'd rather be in 1200 AD England than under any Communism, including the NK or Chicom variants. Preborn children stand a better chance of not being murdered then than they do in modern western societies. If a feudal lord were starving his people on purpose, I could likely appeal to a prince or king, or even the Pope for an interdict.
