The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Thanks, I’ll try that.

You must post a pic of one of Lady Bender’s pies this season. They are a thing of beauty.

It has been weird weather, here. I have no idea if i am late, early or right on time.

I put in compost an manure in all off the raised beds and fertilizer-infused paper on top. Then, Barb put here seedlings in through the cover. Hopefully, weeds wil be discouraged.

My venerable Troybilt Horse started and ran and my garden plot from last year tilled much better this year. I have hopes.

The bees are doing well.

If you ever want to try it, a dash of lemon juice and cardamom in blueberry jam works wonders. :)

That does sound good!

Hubby has suggested habanero peppers too.

There’s probably 50 gallons of berries on my blueberry bushes this year so might get to try ALL the variation :)

My garlic is usually done by now, but seems to be nowhere near done at present. I wonder if it’s possible to be too fertile? They got really tall green stalks this year.

I’ll just have to wait and see a while longer.

Eat them fresh and freeze the rest to use in smoothies. I did make some strawberry syrup one year, when we had more than usual, but I no longer partake of sugar and extremely limit carbohydrates.

Just finished my 6 month blood test. Last one had all good numbers on lipid panel for the first time in 20 years. This one was additional improvement. HDL (the good one) was increased, and triglycerides had gone down some more.

So the carb limitation, added fat diet is working as I expected. I drink whole milk from grass fed cows, and eat butter from grass fed cows. I use olive oil and eat a serving of various nuts daily. I eat eggs and or cheese daily as well.

Nice pictures. Missouri usually has quite a few good days for crops, so we don’t have to sprout our corn, but the cool wet spring last year and this year do delay the planting a bit.

The evergreen corn that I planted this year, had an interesting factoid. It said that it used to be pulled up stalk and all, and hung up in a barn and stayed “fresh” for eating for months.

Is that you on the tractor? What do you mean on call? Well, my plans for the day went to zilch. After trying endlessly to sleep, I finally did go to sleep about 8am this morning.

Didn’t wake up till 3pm this afternoon to the sound of tornado siren. Lots of rain, thunder and lighting, short burst of power outage etc. Looks like my work today will have to be what I did on the closet clean out projects and not the garden.

I do low carb too. The rest of the family can eat carbs though.

I usually freeze 10 or 20 gallons, then put them in my dehydrator (speeds things up to freeze then dehydrate). We put those in oatmeal, yogurt, etc throughout the year.

I freeze another 10-20 gallons to use frozen. Our favorite trick is to pour a cup of frozen blueberries into a bowl, add a heaping dollop of vanilla greek yogurt and a tsp of granola. Chunk that around with a spoon until the berries are evenly coated and yum. That’s summer bfast here until they’re gone.

My bloodwork was a total nightmare until I low carbed. My A1C was 13 somethingorother. I’ve had my triglycerides down in the teens a time or two since I’ve low carbed.

I’m waiting till the zucchini are making. I got one of those spiralizers and have an idea to steam the spirals then dress with some ranch dressing and parmesan cheese.

I have an endive that I am letting continue to try and collect seeds. I am terrible when it comes to planting lettuce. Just sort of put a bunch in my hand and give it a swish over the area-always have a bunch too close together. LOL

We looked at some figs, but none were for zone 4, and other than fig newtons, we aren’t that big on figs. Mostly we have black berries, blueberries, honeyberries etc.

I just found something called Mahonia. It has yellow flowers, and is evergreen, and has edible berries in grape like clusters. Looks pretty, but I have no idea how it tastes.

I like the idea of evergreen stuff in the front yard that could also be edible. Also found a cranberry ground cover that is green and edible.

Might just buy a sample or so and plant to see what they do.

I am very pleased with the Ft. Laramie Strawberries. More cold hardy and an early variety. Has produced better than I expected - the bed it’s in has been planted in various things over the last 4 years and failed to produce.

It’s too close to the walnut tree for most things, and what doesn’t succumb to the toxin is hindered by the shade.

Very tasty berry and some are just as large as the Ozark beauties in better soil and sun location.

Thanks for the tip about freezing before dehydrating. We don’t dehydrate a lot - mostly to experiment, but I like to do freezer clean out every 12-18 months, so that unused frozen stuff is “preserved” either canning tomatoes or drying them etc.

Berries are usually all gone before then though. In fact, I almost always have to buy frozen berries at some point, but every year we plant a few more berries, so maybe one winter it will last till the next batch. LOL

I am convinced that sugar is almost equivalent to poison for most of my kids and grandkids, but it’ll take middle age probably before they wakeup to that.

One of my favorite treats as a kid was introduced to me by a friend whose mom canned loads of blackberries (with plenty of sugar) and they had them in a root cellar type of storage area.

We would open a jar and slit the berries and juiced between us in a bowl. Then we would add fresh cream, give a stir and eat it.
