'Five Came Back' (vanity)

Posted on 06/03/2017 5:15:59 PM PDT by Borges

For the WW2 and film buffs out there...please check out this documentary playing on Netflix. It documents how five of the most prestigious Hollywood film directors (John Ford, William Wyler, Frank Capra, George Stevens, John Huston) put their career on hold to serve in the Armed forces and make films for the war effort. Each one approached the task in a different way. After the war, their work was noticeably changed. Interestingly, the first film made by four of the five was each among the best American films of the 1940s. Ford's 'They Were Expendable, Wyler's 'The Best Years of Our Lives', Capra's 'It's a Wonderful Life' and John Huston's 'The Treasure of the Sierre Madre'. Stevens, who filmed the liberation of Dachau, was unable to regain the light comedic touch he had before the war and spent the 1950s making self consciously heavy melodramas like 'A Place in the Sun', Shane and Giant.

all of the five directors made films. Memphis Belle, Midway , ....

All the films are about an hour and all are on Netflix as well

They are great!

I didn’t like how they all died in the end.

Still enjoy watching The Treasure of the Sierre Madre, "We don't need no stinkin' badges!"

“They Were Expendable” is a great movie but largely forgotten. Definitely worth the small price of streaming or purchasing the restored version on DVD/Blu-ray.

The same is often said about actors before and after their WWII experience, such as Jimmy Stewart.

The Best Years of Our Lives is the best war movie made.

Today’s vets can’t get a job in Hollywood, much less direct.

Those movies weren't exactly stinkers. I guess everybody's mileage varies.

I didn’t say they were stinkers. Just heavy. Stevens had earlier made films like ‘Swing Time’, ‘The More the Merrier’, ‘The Talk of the Town’.
