Former major leaguer Jim Piersall, who bared his soul about his struggles with mental illness in his book "Fear Strikes Out," has died. He was 87.
Piersall died Saturday at a care facility in Wheaton, Illinois, after a monthslong illness, according to the Boston Red Sox, for whom Piersall played for seven of his 17 seasons in the majors.

I remember him. Good Ballplayer. I had his baseball card when I was a kid in the 1950s.

I saw the move Fear Strikes Out when I was just a kid. Karl Malden was, let's say "convincing" as Jim Piersall's father. He should have won an academy award for best supporting actor.
RIP to the real Jim Piersall.

He lived longer than most men.

Is he the guy that use to do head stands whenever he caught a ball?
To: EveningStar
Goodness, I had no idea he was still alive. Praying for the comforting of his family.

he was the best when he teamed up with Harry Caray to do White Sox games. First time I ever heard broadcasters talking like fans.

He was unsparing in his criticism of players who were not trying to give one hundred percent. I remember when former White Sox manager Tony LaRussa tried to confront Piersall after a game.

Piersall once broadcast a tirade about baseball wives and how most were gold diggers which drew backlash from feminist groups. Skip Caray, Harry’s son, replied on WTBS that he thought Fear had actually lined a double off the wall.

Piersall ran around the bases backwards after hitting his 100th career home run.
