ABC, meat producer settle in $1.9B 'pink slime' libel suit

ABC and a South Dakota meat producer announced a settlement Wednesday in a $1.9 billion lawsuit against the American network over its reports on a lean, finely textured beef product that critics dubbed "pink slime."

The terms of the settlement are confidential.

...

BPI claimed in the 2012 complaint that sales declined from about 5 million pounds (2.3 million kilograms) per week to less than 2 million pounds (907,000 kilograms) per week.

The product can be added to ground beef to reduce the overall fat content. It's made from trimmings left after a cow is butchered. The meat is separated from the fat, and ammonia gas is applied to kill bacteria. Former Department of Agriculture microbiologist Gerald Zirnstein named the product "pink slime" in a 2002 agency email.

BPI has said the sales drop forced it to close plants in Iowa, Kansas and Texas, laying off more than 700 workers. Only a Nebraska plant in South Sioux City remained open.

Thanks a lot for nothing, ABC!

Now, let us hope that CNN and the NY Times swallow hard and look at their litigation risk.

That suits me! They went around wantonly trashing a perfectly good food product to the point where no one wanted anything to do with it. It's a classic example of how propaganda, combined with human emotions, can produce incredible effects in manipulating people.

Just like 60 Minutes wiped out the apple crop in WA because volcano dust from Mount St. Helens settled on the fruit and flat out lied and misinformed folks; had no impact whatsoever. Then in another segment they almost put Physio Control, makers of defibrillator equipment into bankruptcy because of false and lying reporting. Then comes the exploding GM trucks or something where they embellished the explosion .... and now there’s CNN.

The GMC/Chevy trucks were rigged with model rocket engines to make sure any expelled gasoline burned in a crash ,,, Audi was slimed back in the same time period for “unintended acceleration” which killed several people in accidents... turned out to be that people were hitting the gas when they thought they were stepping on the brake pedal. damn near bankrupted them though.

I’ve given up on the MSMLSD bunch way back; I only read them for the entertainment those bobble heads give, don’t believe a word they say.

Which followed the Alar "scare", which followed the DDT "scare". All of which led to farmers being wiped out and perfectly good food going to rot or, in the case of DDT, not being grown at all.

Yup, the Lame Stream Media is always looking out for us. /s

Just finely chopped and liquified meat, much like baby food.

Essentially the “raw material” of hot dogs.

Isn’t this more commonly known as baloney? I love baloney, can’t eat it for health reasons but I’ve been known to sneak a sammy with mustard & red onions once in a while. Chile cheese Fritos for the ultimate debauchery. Well, actually a Big Red to wash it down is the ultimate. Can’t do that much anymore.

That’s the meat used in hot dogs and balogna. Both are delicious.

Just like the media is currently trying to bring back the glory days of Watergate with the RussiaRussiaRussiaRussiaRussia “scandal”, so ABC was here trying to bring back the glory days of muckraking with the pink slime lie.
