A new report estimates banning transgender service members would set the U.S. back $960 million, challenging President Donald Trump's pro-ban argument about "the tremendous medical costs" associated with permitting transgender people to serve in the military.
The report, co-authored by the Palm Center and current and retired professors at the Naval Postgraduate School, estimates the cost to replace transgender service members would be 100 times greater than current estimates for the annual cost of providing them transition-related care.
"President Trump said that he wants to fire honorably serving transgender troops in order to save money, but that begs the question, 'How much money would it cost to implement the President's vision?'" Palm Center Executive Director Aaron Belkin said.
"It would be much more expensive to fire transgender troops then to let them keep serving. The President wants to spend $1 dollar to save a dime, and that really doesn't make much business sense."

Why cost so much? Seems like should be near nothing to simply terminate recruitment and administratively discharge current members. Heck, even give them a year salary. With just a few thousand, that won’t add up much. And it sure is cheaper than bringing more in. Just get it done!

Unless you assume the cost of a lawsuit and actual damages awarded, simply putting in a bar to enlistment/reenlistment would not have a cost associated with the program.

Stupid article. There is NO cost for not having transgender troops, but there is a tremendous cost for letting them in, not to mention the damage to military readiness and morale.
Trump made the right decision. It was all political to change the long standing policy and start letting them in.
Military readiness should be the driving force, not catering to political agendas.

Okay, so the near $1 billion is high estimate and it could be 1/10 of that by Rand’s count. And this is replacement cost of the service members, which is not so meaningful since they are likely spending more time in treatment and counseling than working. That’ll save indirect costs as well. More troubling is the reporting that Trump tweeted the end of transgenders in the military but has not done anything official to make it policy. Talk, no action yet.
Banning mentally ill people from military.......priceless. After looking at that list, what they do to themselves, they are mentally ill for sure.
