The officer, an HPD veteran who has been with the department for more than 30 years, was in his patrol car driving to work downtown Sunday morning when he got trapped in high water at I-45 and the Hardy Toll Road.
Search and rescue crews are currently recovering his body. The department has not yet formally notified the officers family.
He was trying different routes, and took a wrong turn, one high-ranking official said, asking not to be identified.

May he rest in the loving arms of the LORD. Prayers for his family and loved ones and all who are being effected by Harvey. God be with them all. This is why you honor the police. He wasn’t looking at color. He lost his life helping all people.
So, so sad to hear. RIP officer and thank you for your service to the Houston community. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone in the hurricane area.
I’m sure his family already knows. May they find comfort in a hero’s life and God’s love.
Sad that any deaths happen during these natural disasters.
I work in the Montrose area and am not even thinking of going in until tomorrow (company is closed until tomorrow anyway), pending news of the conditions. I guess people who feel they have to go in, such as this unfortunate policeman should be wearing lifejackets as a precaution. I don’t swim very well and the thought of high water is pretty scary for me.
Sad. Prayers for him and his family.
God comfort his family and friends. Appears he didn’t get the “turn around, don’t drown” warning. So sad.
Prayers for him and his family.
You know that evil disgusting filth of an asst. visiting prof from Univ. of Tampa Florida is cheering over the death.
RIP.
Prayers for his family and the Houston police department.
This will make registered Democrats happy....
I live in North Texas and when hurricane season hits we usually get a nice reprieve from very hot weather. But, this is really sad.
“Turn Around, Don’t Drown”. Is not a catchy phrase. It is deadly serious.
From the press conference, he drove into a 16ftdeep flooded underpass and died in his cruiser. Divers found him. They didn’t say why he didn’t make it out of his car. Maybe the impact knocked him out?
How very sad! Prayers for this dear man’s family.
