A Web site set up by PC maker Dell Inc. to help customers recover from malicious software and other computer maladies may have been hijacked for a few weeks this summer by people who specialize in deploying said malware, KrebsOnSecurity has learned.
There is a program installed on virtually all Dell computers called Dell Backup and Recovery Application. Its designed to help customers restore their data and computers to their pristine, factory default state should a problem occur with the device. That backup and recovery program periodically checks a rather catchy domain name DellBackupandRecoveryCloudStorage.com which until recently was central to PC maker Dells customer data backup, recovery and cloud storage solutions.
Sometime this summer, DellBackupandRecoveryCloudStorage.com was suddenly snatched away from a longtime Dell contractor for a month and exposed to some questionable content. More worryingly, there are signs the domain may have been pushing malware before Dells contractor regained control over it.

Who is this? DELL?
They are still in Business??
They gave up customer service to India, and quality suffered in a big way afterward. Now this. Was the domain being managed from India too?
I’m on a Dell laptop right now. Was that a bad idea?
Globalism = Pandora’s Box.
Imho, Severely krappy computers and they broke one to bits at their warranty repair and actually returned it to the customer that way. We avoid that company like the plague
Yup, they’re still in business.
They recently purchased EMC for some 70 billion dollars.
Largest tech acquisition in the US.
Ping for your list?
I have two Dell desktop computers, and with the exception of a failed DVD drive in each unit, they have both been rock solid. The older of the two is about 10 years old. One drive was replaced under warranty, overnighted via FedEx, with exactly zero hassle, and the other cost me 20 bucks from NewEgg.
Thanks to Swordmaker for the ping!!
Nothing but Dell’s at work. And I don’t use their support.
Dell is still the big dog in the enterprise world.
I’m on a Dell right now, also. Bought it earlier this year. No problems so far...I find software to be more of a problem.
I use ruggedized laptops for my work. Although I prefer Panasonic ToughBooks I’m currently working on a Dell. It’s a nice machine - well made and very fast.
As always YMMV ;’}
Dell's business support is actually excellent and is located in the US, not India. . . but you have to get connected properly to it.
