Last year, the ratings decline subsided after the presidential election. This year, there was no presidential election, which means there likely will be no post-election bounce in the ratings.
With the final eight weeks of the regular season beginning tonight, theres no reason to think this years troubling trend will change, because theres no reason for people to return to following football after the various debates and town halls and other political shows and specials that sucked people away from watching football before November 8, 2016. And with, as Darren Rovell of ESPN noted on Wednesday, total ratings are down 5.5 percent through the first nine weeks of 2017 in comparison to the first nine weeks of 2016, the absence of a post-election bounce means the gap is about to get bigger.

Die NFL. Die.
Yep. Huge Packer fan.
Dead to me now.
100% NFL free.
Cancelled Sunday Ticket, as a result Directv an indirect casualty as I no longer need them. No merch for Christmas. Not going to a game in Charlotte. Hotels, restaurants, bars, also not getting my money. All in all several THOUSAND a year richer.
Seahawks game preempted Wheel of Fortune last night.
Click.
I haven’t watched a game since the Super Bowl which was the best one in years. However, that is it.......this year’s Super Bowl, we normally go to a party in the neighborhood so that is yet to be determined. However, the normal Sunday games we are not watching.
The ratings were going down due to head injuries, but the anthem did them no favors. I almost wonder if they ever will get back to their heyday.
Liberals have wanted to get rid of football and replace with soccer for a long time. The kneeling just makes this happen faster then it would have happened before.
When your business model includes offending a large part of your paying customers it is logical that business would decrease. An entertainment product vehicle designed to appeal to the masses entering into the world of partisan politics is stupid. But, the NFL is obviously more concerned with calling their customers ‘racists’ then with playing a silly game. Bad business decisions are made all the time.....just sort of surprised it’s coming from the NFL. They’ve been pretty solid the last 50 years, but someone decided to put the idiots in charge, I guess.
NFS Negro Fatigue Syndrome is killing the BLM/NFL as patriotic Americans walk away from its vile creatures.
Haven’t watched a game in two years.
The real test comes during the Christmas season.
I predict a pretty big hit in merchandising sales.
Just based on the excerpt the writer is fixated on the election of President Donald Trump. The issue isn’t DJT it is thug nfl players showing disrespect for our country.
Cancelled DirectTv earlier this year—we did purchase tickets before all this protest hoopla began. It will be the last NFL tickets we will be attending. Nov 26th game Steelers vs Packers.
Hubs USED to be a diehard Steelers fan (he has a tattoo) and son/ daughter-in-law still like the Packers and want to just see football not all this political crap.
Co-worker who has season tickets for the Buffalo Bills (lifetime Bills fan) is still going—I guess the Bills are doing better this year.
We have stopped watching NFL games completely on local channels—not too hard for me. I’m a hockey fan. But for hubby, he is getting disgusted, First NFL and now Jim Beam!! He said the leftists took away everything I loved.
There are a couple of Freepers who appear to have a stake in the NFL. They usually show up on these threads to explain how the weather, or weaker matchups, or some other excuse explains the week on week drop from a year ago. Tagging the thread to come back this evening to see if they offer the current excuse.
We have a regular waiter for our weekly dinner out at our local Miller’s Ale House. He tells us the Sunday and Monday night business is wayyyyy off. INstead of being a day that he typically would fight for, he is now trying to find ways to make sure he is off those days.
Saturdays are as normal and maybe up just a bit.
Kaepernick + BLM + Chargers move to LA = No more football of *any* kind, including the Negro Felon League.
We need an NFL that ‘looks like America.’
75% blacks? How about an Affirmative Action lawsuit. Get more whites in there, a few Asians.
Bob Costas said it’s only a matter of time before football ends with the evidence of brain damage from playing. The Hernandez guy’s brain image also in the news yesterday. He’s the tight end that murdered someone. Turns out he had brain damage and wasn’t even 30.
NFL will die. Sadly college football and high school likely to go with it. Too dangerous.
Guess blacks will have to find a new sport.
In a teensy way he is right although he has it discombobulated IMHO. The players ARE protesting the election of DJT and all it ‘represents.’
In the NFL player’s brain, (”which is so minute, there wouldn’t be enough for a hungry cannibal to cover a small water biscuit” -BA) Prez Trump supports police brutality against minorities and oppression of minorities as a whole—ie slowing the growth of government—aka welfare goodies for gimmedats.
Two years ago at this time, such a premise would be utterly unthinkable. I had fantasy leagues to keep up with, and frankly, I liked the sport.
Now? meh. For the NFL to lose a hardcore fan like that, in just 2 years ..... they've got a real problem.

OK, now I get the connection in the story between the NFL ratings drop and the protests. Which is obviously the cause. But the liberal writer is trying so hard to tap dance around it and avoid it, that he is coming up with a ridiculous cause the election itself causing rating drops.
The story is like something out of 1984. The truth is glaring and apparent to everyone. And yet the left tries to make people think it is something different. The sad thing is with the dumbing down of our schools, many will believe it.
I am doing my part as well.
Screw the NFL.
I've given this a little thought. I usually get together with "the guys" a couple times during the season. We get caught up with each other, have a cold beverage or two, and eat things that our wives (and doctors) wouldn't approve of.
We're getting together this weekend. I've decided that keeping up with my friends is more important than a "football ban". I won't let the clowns in the NFL intrude into my personal life.
And, if I really want to split hairs, the TV's will be on football in the restaurant where we're going, regardless of whether we're there, or not. So, a "boycott" would be pointless.
That's my $0.02. Your mileage may vary.
