Sean Parker unloads on Facebook "exploiting" human psychology
Sean Parker, the founding president of Facebook, gave me a candid insider's look at how social networks purposely hook and potentially hurt our brains.
Be smart: Parker's I-was-there account provides priceless perspective in the rising debate about the power and effects of the social networks, which now have scale and reach unknown in human history. He's worried enough that he's sounding the alarm.
Parker, 38, now founder and chair of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, spoke yesterday at an Axios event at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, about accelerating cancer innovation. In the green room, Parker mentioned that he has become "something of a conscientious objector" on social media.
By the time he left the stage, he jokingly said Mark Zuckerberg will probably block his account after reading this:

I think these effects can be greatly exaggerated, though. Many people I know were more active on FB 7-8 yrs ago than now, usually by a large margin. I still have an account but hardly ever log on anymore, and when I do I hardly see evidence of much activity from most people. Ofc I’m in my 50s but it’s not just my generation that cooled to it, younger members of my extended family in their teens and 20s are hardly there anymore, either (maybe they are all on Snapchat or something newer, I don’t know, but Fakebook does not seem to be so addictive in the long run).
I only keep an account there because of scattered friends and family from across many years, but very few of us seem to spend any significant time or energy there.
Fakebook can say they have X millions and billions of accounts, but I wonder how many really remain active to a very significant extent?
For those of you who think these 'elite' miscreants don't exist, check Sean out.
“It’s a social-validation feedback loop ... exactly the kind of thing that a hacker like myself would come up with, because you’re exploiting a vulnerability in human psychology.”
HOORAY Sean Parker
This isn’t so different from what food processors have done — exploited human dietary instincts — and it’s led to over half the population being obese.
The purpose is to get you to reveal what you’re thinking, so they can feed you ads that you will click on.
Lure the unsuspecting individuals to let it all hang out, and we will put ads in front of you that you will not be able to resist.
Doesn’t seen like a good business model to me, but they have made billions.

That’s their aim, but since I click on zero ads there it doesn’t work in my case.
Those who need affirmation are probably more addicted. I follow anti-suicide and PTSD pages although I do enjoy country living and winter posts. Better than tv anyway.
