Dinnertime Favorites: What's the Best Frozen Pizza?

Consumer Reports rates 26 veggie, cheese pizzas for taste, nutrition

Your family might have a favorite frozen pizza that you eat as-is or even add some toppings to, but maybe there’s a pizza in the store that’s even healthier and tastier than your go-to. Consumer Reports food experts evaluated 26 different frozen vegetable and cheese pies for taste, nutrition and price.

"We consider the nutrition profile and also evaluate for taste. Ideally, a store-bought frozen pizza should taste like it was just put together with fresh ingredients. And it’s a high bar, but Consumer Reports found some pies that came close," said Amy Keating, with Consumer Reports.

Trader Joe’s Organic Roasted Vegetable Pizza has a variety of chunky veggies, such as peppers, zucchini and eggplant, and it has five grams of fiber per serving. And Dr. Oetker Virtuoso Thin and Crispy Crust Pizza Vegetable Medley has fresh-tasting cherry tomatoes, peppers and red onion. Pepperoncini peppers add a little tang.

The top-ranked cheese pizzas earned good marks overall. American Flatbread Tomato Sauce and Three Cheese Pizza has an interesting blend of flavorful cheese on a thin, whole grain style crust. Amy’s Cheese Pizza is a combination of tender, yeasty crust topped with mozzarella and a fresh tasting tomato sauce.

The American Flatbread costs about $4 a slice and Amy's Cheese Pizza is about $2.67 a slice.

DiGiorno Original also rates good and costs $1.17 a slice.

Lotsa’ Motsa’ is pretty good. Bellatorio ultra thin crust is good. Some Digiornos are OK. I eat about two per year.

Probably the same as most all others in reality, my son and I ate a lot of these when he was a young lad. They were his favorite, so I guess I grew fond of them, too. Like previously mentioned, a pizza stone worked wonders on the crust.

Don’t laugh but the best frozen pizza’s I’ve had so far, and I’ve tried quite a few, is the Sam’s Choice at Walmart. They come in different toppings and I think thin or regular crust. I prefer thin.

Met a serious chef...his son did a stint as Trump’s chef. He was cooking a frozen pizza, so I had to know what kind. Red Baron. Of, course, he had a pizza oven, too.

The one I tried was either a supreme or something similar. When I took it out of the box, I noticed that it did have more ingredients on top than any others I have seen.

That was probably the reason it was a bit better than the rest.

I’ll order my favorite fresh pizza, eat two slices hot then individually wrap and freeze the other six. They’ll last three weeks or so. It tastes pretty close to fresh if you reheat it in the oven at 350 for 10 min (no microwave in this case).

Yep - your Dad and mine may have been related. His idea of a treat was a cheese pizza - hold the cheese. Strictly a meat & potatoes guy, his obsession was salt. He heavily salted everything. (I never use salt and find the natural salts in food quite sufficient).

My Mom was a wonderful cook who put up with Dad’s sparse diet until us kids were into our teens. Then she started taking cooking classes as a local community college - French, Italian, and Oriental (are we still allowed to say that?!).

We couldn’t get enough and Dad was happy - as long as he got his steak.

put shredded cheese on a silicone sheet/pan and pat down gently. Top with bacon bits, ham, veggies and garlic powder and cook at 375 for 4 minutes then cool and eat. Better than pizza imho.

We always preheat to high temperature, my kids have been really like Kroger brand frozen pizza lately. They are not great but not Freshetta bad either.

I agree, especially with the thin crust! Never cared for the deep dish ( all dough ) pizza.

DiGiorno's new Crispy Pan Pizza(Supreme)is pretty good. For awhile was getting Freschetta's Supreme pizza(just added some toppings), but they got kind of chintzy(like a lot of foods)during/after the recession with size/quantity/quality of ingredients.

Don't have much in our small town, but do have a decent local pizza place.

Their crust is the bomb.

I've tried a lot of recipes for pizza crust, only 1 came out half-decent.

Be cool if I could make my own.

I’ve tried most of them and they’re mostly too bland for me.

The only one I find somewhat satisfactory is actually one of the cheaper brands - Jacks. I buy the thin pepperoni and pull the meat off, add a bit of extra cheese then the pepperoni goes back on with a bit of chopped onion.

Their sauce actually has some TASTE. To me the most important flavor ingredient after the toppings is the sauce. I find most people like very little sauce. I like a generous amount.
