The warnings have been ubiquitous for decades: drinking alcohol while pregnant could have severe impacts on the unborn child.
Now, a new study of thousands of first graders in four different regions of the United States contends the rates are much higher than previously believed perhaps five times the most recent estimates.
The study, published in the Journal of American Medical Association, has already indicated that the effects of alcohol on fetuses are statistically comparable to other development disabilities.
Our results suggest that the rate of FASD (fetal alcohol spectrum disorder) in children in the Untied States is as high or higher than autism spectrum disorders (ASD), said Christina Chambers, co-principal investigator, a pediatrician at the UC San Diego School of Medicine.
The CDC rate of autism currently stands at 14.6 per 1,000 children the age of 8.
The new analysis of FASD finds the rate in the four regions studied was as low as 11, and as high as 50 children, per 1,000. (Those are the conservative estimates, they add).

A lot of times you can tell by looking at the eyes. They are too far apart. Kate Hudson is a perfect example. Weird.
Hedonistic debauchery is now common. Many women of child bearing age drink alcohol and use drugs of many different sorts. They continue their habits even when pregnant. Alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, barbiturates and a wide variety of prescription drugs such as sedatives and anti depressants are soaking fetal brains as they try to form and develop. Its no mystery why the incidence of autism, behavioral abnormalities and “learning disabilities” is skyrocketing in modern day America.
I had a stepson with undiagnosed fetal alcohol syndrome. I diagnosed him with it (no, I’m not a doctor) when I first met him at his age two. Wide-set eyes, the most obvious physical sign, and slow learner. My diagnosis was proved correct as he grew up (long after I had divorced his mother). He could not control his emotions and could not work. He eventually gained SS disability and lived on a subsistence level until he overdosed on some drug and was carried out of an apartment to the lawn by his low-life associates and left to die there.
My Ex was a school teacher and she had to deal with it every year.
I looked around at all the out of control moronic drunks and druggies and decided early on not to partake.
I knew a spec ed teacher who’s child, I’m sure, had this. Poor little thing was woozy most of the time. Mama would drink on the weekends and say its a good thing she had breast milk from the week before. Uh, excuse me, but a spec ed teacher, of all things, should know the alcohol stays in her system the Monday after partying all weekend.
Well said sir. The price they pay seems of little concern to them, just as murder of the unborn is likewise.
Such suffering so many people must endure is hard to imagine. Few people understand the anguish hidden in another man’s heart. God bless and give you strength.
A wise and mature decision. I quit it all in my late 20s.
The spec Ed teacher is a child abuser.
And yet it continues. The alcohol lobby is very powerful to the detriment of so many children. Adults can make their own decisions. I get so tired of hearing about the healthful benefits of alcohol.
Lots of people with FLK syndrome.
First use of an acronym must be defined. Flk?
