History Proves That Americans Can Unite Even When Torn In Two

APPOMATTOX, VA. — On April 9, 1865, Gen. Robert E. Lee strode onto the porch of a two-story brick home and stared out at a lawn filled with Union soldiers, his Confederate staff of two, and his horse Traveler.

Still wearing full military dress, Lee raised his gloved hands and punched his left fist into his right palm. The sound of leather meeting leather echoed in the unsteady silence.

Then, as Lee mounted Traveler, Major Gen. Ulysses S. Grant emerged from the house onto the porch.

Now facing each other, Grant raised his hat, as did Lee. It wasn’t a salute, but clearly an acknowledgment of the moment.

As Lee turned towards the dirt road and headed east towards his troops, the 198th Pennsylvania Infantry played “Auld Lang Syne.”

The Civil War was over.

“As the sun rose that morning neither man would know by mid-afternoon the war, for all intents and purposes, would end that day,” explained Ernie Price, a park ranger and director of education at Appomattox National Park.

But by mid-morning, Lee knew the Confederate cause was finished. He sent a message to Grant to meet for the purpose of surrender, and the Appomattox home of grocer Wilmer McLean was chosen for the moment.

When they met, Grant was poorly dressed, his uniform rumpled and covered in mud from the ride the night before. Years later in his memoirs, he admitted that he had no idea what he was going to ask from Lee in the surrender.

Yet, once he sat down at a small spindle desk in McLean’s front parlor, words of reconciliation poured out....

The communists always hated the American idea, as well as Christianity. This used to be a marginal presence in American life. The communists then dropped the C word, became radicals and progressives, and gained positions of power in the academy and various leftist organizations. The cancer has spread. We cannot unite when one of the major factions in American society despises the country, its history and heritage, its religion and culture, and its people. We have been invaded by an alien and hostile ideology. There is no compromising with it.

It took 600k dead for the globalists to centralize power in DC.

It’s tragic when you look at all the wars fought and that it’s all orchestrated by the same people, or the same group of people rather.

“Nothing — not secession, not “preserving the union,” not ending slavery, not anything — justified the union’s barbaric war on the Southern people. And what happened in the South for generations after the war is unforgivable.”

Your entire post was accurate in every detail.

It has been upped to 800,000 dead. Doesn’t take into account the thousands more Southern civilians killed during the war.

“Just look what the South did to Blacks as soon as Reconstruction ended: the KKK, disenfranchisement, and every effort to violently “put them back in their place”.”

After Lincoln's War, the north controlled the presidency, the congress, and the courts. And the north had all the guns.

The negative things that happened to blacks in the south and in the north, happened because the north allowed it to happen, or caused it to happen.

One need only to look at the fully-stocked urban ghettos in the north built after Lincoln's War - and that still exists today - to realize that northerners profited financially from low skill, low pay wages of blacks and whites wrung from the south's agrarian society.

In your search for truth, ponder this: slavery was an American issue (and historically a worldwide issue), not a southern issue.

Totally agree! The indoctrination is strong in this one.

Notice the poster says “white southerners “, completely ignoring the fact that those were “white southern DEMOCRATS “

Thank you both for the civil discourse in disagreement on a difficult topic.

May this be a model of how things are done here at FR.

“I have no desire to reconcile with the treacherous left. I’m not on the same side as Michael Moore or Stephen Colbert or any other of their scumbags.

><

I’m with you. I want no part of them and their ilk. We cannot reconcile with enemies of all that is good and decent.”

You got that right. We settled with each other after Civil War, and Germany and Japan after WW2. This time there is no settling with the left.

“Neither Grant nor Lee were commies. Sorry...I had to point that out!

><

It is an excellent point.”

The South and North were honorable and decent. Not so with today’s left.

“Yes we will be reunited as a nation. There will always be the few who will hold tight to their grievances. At the end of this struggle theirs will not be the voices heard. They will be silenced by the authority of the love that exists between us.”

Your optimism appeals to me. But scripture, it seems, does not support the view that most people will choose love over evil. Everyone can and many do but most choose the broad way and not the narrow.

As for our nation: it is clear there is lots more trouble ahead.

Well I didn’t really want to say it but if the grid goes down most of the problem children will be in the first die off because they don’t keep an extra can of chili in the pantry. :-)

Only Generals Lee and Grant could have ended the war as they did.
I shudder to think of the outcome if some other Union generals had been in Grants position.

Good thoughts Lou, but to the rabid left God is their enemy too, for if people follow God they will not submit to the godless left. .

Ronald Reagan was asked how we dealt with the Communist Soviet Union and he simply said “We win, they lose”.

Right on. The Left wants to destroy us. They will never “reconcile”.

Lucifer is alive and on the ropes. People like Peterson confessing faith in God is an intellectual’s nightmare. Pretending to be god is no substitute for the Creator of the Universe. Thus far no liberal has demonstrated to me he/she/it deserves my worship. Not that I am looking.
Atheists are fools who claim they are geniuses. I am a genius who claims to be a fool for Christ.

I don’t think America will ever be united again.

><

Not when the other side wants us dead or in concentration camps. They have made it very clear reconciliation in not something they want.
OTOH, many of us feel the same.

><><

You are right on. We can never “reconcile” with them.

Yep, they’d happily load us on the cattle cars. But this time the “Jews” are armed.

You are absolutely right. There is no reconciliation with a mortal enemy. We’ve only seen the beginning of this war.

If not for Grant’s magnanimity the South might not have been so quick to forgive and forget.

“If not for Grant’s magnanimity the South might not have been so quick to forgive and forget.”

Grant knew that Lee would never surrender If it meant his men being treated as prisoners. Grant wanted it over and gave terms he was certain Lee could accept. He basically put himself in Lee’s position and acted accordingly.

The real shame is that Lincoln was assassinated and less savory characters were allowed to have their way in the post war south.
If Lincoln had lived I am relatively certain everything would have been different.
