Enoch Powell’s Immigration Speech, 50 Years Later
National Review ^ | April 19, 2018 | Douglas Murray

The 20th of this month marks a significant anniversary in Britain. For it is the 50th anniversary of what is probably the most famous — and certainly the most notorious — speech by any mainstream politician since the war.

On April 20, 1968, Enoch Powell gave a speech to the Conservative Political Centre in Birmingham on the subject of Commonwealth migration, integration, and possible re-emigration. It was a carefully chosen moment, and a carefully chosen intervention from a man who was then the shadow defense minister in the Conservative opposition of Edward Heath. Powell knew what he was about to do, telling a friend who edited a local newspaper, “I’m going to make a speech at the weekend and it’s going to go up ‘fizz’ like a rocket; but whereas all rockets fall to the earth, this one is going to stay up.” For half a century, Powell’s speech has certainly lingered in some fashion — whether by staying up or by rumbling away underneath Britain’s political debates.

And even while trying to eviscerate Enoch Powell, every single thing he said is coming true. In London, as in San Francisco, you can find “excreta pushed into” a lot of places. You can find smiling little children following you around, begging for money. With their parents or male guardians watching closely to make sure you give them something.

Enoch Powell’s speech might not have been easy on the ears, but every single word of it was true.

For me, J. Enoch Powell’s legacy is his lexicon to Herodotus. Very useful tool for anyone reading Herodotus in the original Greek.

"In this country in 15 or 20 years' time the black man will have the whip hand over the white man."

Not just incorrect, but spectacularly so. In fact, in the 1980's, Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister.

So his time scale was off.

Can you deny his overall theme, especially if you substitute “Asian” for “black”? Britain is now having to admit to a knife attack every few hours.

“Predictions are hard. Especially about the future”.

Interesting, but useless article. Those of us who are Patriots are tired of reading “blah” screeds about that which we already know. It’s time for ACTION. We need Tom Cotton’s Bill to be passed-cutting legal immigration into our country by at least HALF!

Ah, I could never quite wrap my head around Greek. Latin, French, Russian and German in high school and college. Loved Latin.
