Olney: Giants should consider a Bumgarner blockbuster
ESPN ^ | April 24th, 2018 | Buster Olney

Posted on 04/24/2018 2:33:15 PM PDT by Mariner

The San Francisco Giants played according to the script of their front office on Monday night. Chris Stratton, who is quickly establishing himself as a reliable force in the rotation, threw well against the Nationals, and there was some power, this time from Mac Williamson, who clubbed a baseball to a spot right-handed hitters almost never reach in AT&T Park.

But if there are not a lot more good days for the Giants before the July 31 trade deadline -- if they drift out of contention in the National League West -- then the team should do everything it can to steer around the abyss that swallowed the Phillies in recent seasons. If the Giants struggle over the next couple of months, they should take October legend Madison Bumgarner into the trade market.

A rival evaluator chatted about the Giants earlier this month, about the accumulation of players who could be on the downslope of their respective careers. “They have to get restarted and start turning the page, and they don’t have a lot of ways to do that,” he said.

Nope. If the Giants turned into sellers, they wouldn’t get much in return for Andrew McCutchen, not when McCutchen is just a few months from becoming a free agent. First baseman Brandon Belt just turned 30 the other day and is owed about $65 million through the 2021 season, and given how the market for first basemen has been saturated, he has no trade value. The Giants owe 32-year-old third baseman Evan Longoria $60 million; even if San Francisco thought about flipping him, he would almost certainly have no trade value.

How in the hell did Buster Olney ever get a job as a baseball analyst?

No team in their right mind would ever trade a 28yr old Madison Bumgarner.

He's the best playoff pitcher in the history of baseball. And a solid workhorse in the regular season.

Orel Hershiser had a playoffs that has never been matched, in my opinion.

(Wiki)
In the 1988 National League Championship Series between Hershiser's Dodgers and the New York Mets, Hershiser not only started Games 1 and 3, but recorded the final out in Game 4 in relief for a save. He then pitched a shutout in Game 7 and was selected as the NLCS MVP.[25] He then pitched a shutout in Game 2 of the World Series and allowed only two runs in a complete game in the clinching victory in Game 5, winning the World Series MVP Award.[26]

The question is, by the time the team is good again, will he still be good? If not, then trading should be an option.

“No team in their right mind would ever trade a 28yr old Madison Bumgarner.”

The Pittsburgh Pirates would trade him in a heartbeat given all of the financial flexibility, years of control, promises of a bright future that never comes, and other garbage they can shovel to their (dwindling) fan base when obtaining multiple fringe prospects for players that have the audacity to be paid what they’re worth.

You said “No team in their right mind though ... “ ... seeing that the Pirates have no desire to win, they’re certainly not in their right mind ... so nevermind :-).

(PS The Pirates traded Gerrit Cole to Houston for a 4 pack of nonsense ... of course, they’re labeling him as a “clubhouse cancer” up here in the media since the Pirates FO looks like a pack of frigging morons giving him away for nothing ... McCutchen is off to a slow start, but that’s the norm for him ... he WILL catch fire)

The problem is that there are several other teams *cough* Rangers *cough* that find themselves in the same situation.

Back when Houston did it, they were pretty much the only team that did it, so they could load up.

That is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. This Olney must be paid by the Dodgers or something.

Look, the Giants WILL struggle this year. Why? WEAK starting rotation excepting Bumgarner and maybe somebody else and THE WORST bullpen in baseball.

How did they win the WS three times? PITCHING. Why were they in the cellar last year? NO PITCHING. Why will they be lousy this year? NO PITCHING.

Somebody get a clue.

https://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/30/sports/baseball/madison-bumgarner-sf-giants-world-series-2014-rises-to-the-moment-and-jaws-drop.html

“Bumgarner’s final World Series line sparkles: 2-0 with a save and a 0.43 earned run average, with nine hits, one run, one walk and 17 strikeouts in 21 innings. Add in 15 scoreless innings in earlier victories, against Texas in 2010 and Detroit in 2012, and you get a 0.25 E.R.A. that ranks as the best in World Series history, minimum 25 innings.”

I'm not sure he's the best playoff pitcher in history.

He had one of the great post seasons as a pitcher in 2014.

The Giants bullpen has been outstanding. And, once Bumgarner returns to join Cueto and Smardijia, they will be one of the best rotations in baseball.

Right now they have the 6th best ERA in MLB.

I bet the Giants wished they traded Tim Lincecum when he was 28.

I bet the Giants wished they traded Tim Lincecum when he was 28.

And of course the idiot Rangers thought he could still pitch.

He IS on the 60 day DL. But is expected back at the end of May.

Blisters on his throwing hand.

The Rangers would not have signed him if he couldn’t still pitch.

When I was having lunch the other day they flashed “is Lebron the best NBA player ever?”

That is how far sports analysis has fallen.

Lebron doesn’t even crack the top 25. He is at least 5 behind Kobe. We can argue Magic vs. Michael (and other notables) all day but I mean WTH????

Lebron may be the best player today but that is like being the best yodeler in Harlem.

Basketball players today can’t actually play basketball. And sadly the infection has permeated college.

What’s the point, the Rangers are the worst team in baseball.
