The Reds are at .182, and there a 3 other teams with worse records than the Rangers at .333

We’ll see at the end of the year. Because most likely the Rangers, as they should, should trade of their current players that have any trade value for prospects. That includes Cole Hamels.

The Giants are NOT going to let Bumgarner go. That whole idea is insane on its face.’

The Giants would love to have Hamels, and they can afford him too.

“Make the Rangers an offer....Everything Must Go!”

Yeah, for the Rangers that’s true.

However, for the Giants it’s not.

When everyone is healthy, they have a legitimate shot.

If that’s the case, then yes, they should keep Bumgarner. And I think the NL is wide open this year.

They’ll have a very good starting rotation in the deadest park in MLB, a first-rate bullpen, Posey, McCutchen, Longoria, Belt, Panik, Crawford (perhaps the best defensive and offensive infield in baseball right now) and a solid bench.

Smardijia just cam back and won his first game. Cueto (2-0) leads MLB in ERA (0.35). Bumgarner back in June. Their 4th guy in the rotation is Chris Stratton, 2-1 and a 2.32 ERA.

Who cares who’s nr 5...

“Back when Houston did it, they were pretty much the only team that did it, so they could load up.”

The Pirates have been doing what Houston did for over 20 years now.

The *big* difference is when the Astros had the core players in place and felt like they had a shot at winning, they actually went all in, signed/traded for the players they needed, and went for it.

The Pirates recently had a great nucleus. I am not exaggerating ... had the Pirates added about $15M to whatever they spent from 2012 to 2016, they more than likely would have made it deep into the playoffs or World Series. They probably could have *won* it in 2015!!!

The Pirates have an owner problem though. This owner collects a welfare check that pays for the financing of his stadium. He also collects welfare in the form of “stadium support payments” so that he can get new scoreboards and other garbage from taxpayers. He also collects welfare checks for his ski resorts in the area. He also gets welfare checks from MLB in the form of revenue sharing.

Bob Nutting (now scumbag owner, mastermind of the McClatchey group that assumed control of the team in 1996)) got the team for *nothing* ... he only assumed their debt. The debt was pricey at the time ($60M). He lead the charge for public financing of the stadium through McClatchey and spelled out what the Pirates “needed to compete”. The deal he got was :

1> The Commonwealth of PA gives him an “interest free loan” (i.e. the taxpayers pay on the interest).

2> A tax on tickets sold at PNC Park pays off the loan.

3> He agrees to a meager 30 year lease.

4> He collects monies from the new stadium authority for stadium upgrades and maintenance.

Since Nutting got the team, the team has skyrocketed in value ... Forbes places it at $1.25B USD. Amazing, huh? Seriously, given the exact same funding, I’m convinced a frigging moron could do what Nutting did.

The scummy punk has no need to boost ticket sales to help pay down the stadium faster ... taxpayers are on the hook for that. He has absolutely *zero* pressure to sign anyone to anything. As soon as a team looks promising, it is blown up and all of the great pieces are traded away for virtually nothing (some of that blame falls on the idiot GM). I’m sure when the lease is up in 2030, they’ll shower the filth with some kind of sweetheart deal just to keep the pathetic team in the city.

The Pirates were able to cry “small market” poor a few times after Bonds left, but fans started to come around when they saw teams like Kansas City and Cleveland winning by spending a little on free agents to fill big holes. Now more people are praying MLB forced the beady eyed, inbred looking prick to sell the team.

So, Houston “stole” half of the Pirates model :-) (blow up rebuild) ... the thing is, when it was apparent that the Astros had the pieces in place to win it all, they took the risk and delivered for the fans (and to make money of course).

Bob Nutting would have never allowed those final few moves the Astros made. Bob can afford those kinds of moves in a “push” (the Pirates are too small market to pay big name players what they demand for a little more than a season ... I totally get that) ... but Bob would rather not take the risk despite all of the welfare he receives. Bob Nutting is the poster boy of why government needs to stay the hell out of private industry.

Giants and Brian Sabean kept the criminal Bonds to attract the fans. Then they won three WS. Now they are hurting with old, expensive players. Cool uniforms, excellent stadium and freezing bleachers. They should start selling immediately and follow the Astro’s playbook. Oh, and ESPN is useless.

How did that happen? As far as I knew, their draft didn’t focus on pitching. Were new pitchers brought up from AAA?

Where does their bullpen rank and do they have a lights out closer? They REALLY need that.

Anyway, I hope you’re right. If they show me they mean business and do whatever it takes to get top-notch pitching, I’ll sign up for my MLB audio and start following them again.

And I hope the Giants feels about this Olney’s idea the way a lot of us here feel - STUPID. If they did something as stupid as trade MadBum, I’d walk away from them again.

“How did that happen?”

They brought Chris Stratton up through the system and he’d been very effective. Surprise!

They already had Cueto, Smaridija...and Bum coming back in June.

The bullpen has been completely retooled with minor trades and Spring signings of walk-ons.

Yes, they need a closer. But Mark Melancon is due back by the end of June and Will Smith should be ready by the end of May.

6th best ERA in baseball right now, and will be getting much, much better before the break.

Not to mention a much better offense and defense.

Subscribe. They’re in it.

Precisely the reason to trade him. If they keep him he’ll never sniff the playoffs again
