In 1941 he decided to apply for a Navy commission but was turned down even though he was spending time teaching seamanship to Naval Reserve OCS candidates. Ebsen applied for a commission in the Coast Guard. He was accepted and commissioned a Lieutenant (jg) in the Coast Guard. He served on the Navy frigate USS Pocatello, a weather ship that served on Station Able. He was honorably discharged a Lieutenant in 1946. Ebsen went on to various bit parts in movies, but his career really took off when Walt Disney hired him to play George Russel, Davey Crocketts (Fess Parker), partner.

And remember, he was damn near, almost, just about The Tin Man. Only an allergic reaction to the aluminum makeup ended it.
The men I knew who got into the CG had high GT scores.
“Betty, call Lt. Dibble and have him meet me at the docks in 15 minutes “
Wow. Love how I learn trivia I had never heard on threads like this.
Did not realize Ebsen was originally to be Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz, switched roles with Ray Bolger to be Tin Man and had to leave before filming for health reasons.

He was a very talented man.
Great actor and patriot.
Actually he was supposed to be the Tin Man but his allergy to the Make-up sent him to the hospital.
Buddy Ebsen, Danny Kaye, Howard Morris and Harvey Korman from The Danny Kaye Show, 1964. Corny, but I found it entertaining.

Nice series of posts.
Buddy was also a very enthusiastic coin collector. He had quite the collection and was the founder of the Beverly Hills coin club. He had some really great flowing hair and capped bust pieces. Was big into gold.
Thanks, got about a hundred on my list.
Ebsen was a staunch conservative. Nancy Kulp (Miss Jane) was a liberal Democrat. In 1984, she ran for the US House in Pennsylvania. Ebsen called her opponent and provided an endorsement and a radio ad describing Kulp as "too liberal." She was trounced and was enduringly bitter at Ebsen's role in her defeat.

Right. Scarecrow would have been hay fever.
Yes but did you know Nancy Kulp is a Famous Veteran?
I got about a hundred to go. Search keyword famousveteran for all threads.
Almost being killed bounced Ebsen out of The Wizard of Oz. And his replacement's makeup was changed from power to more of a paint.
Amazing what actors and actresses tolerated back then! They were troupers!!
I dont know how Eddie Albert was passed up for The Medal from his actions on Tarawa. Their are many who got it for far less.
