For decades, Russia has suffered a brain and youth drain: According to federal statistics agency Rosstat, more than 300,000 people left the country in 2016. A recent survey conducted by the state-funded pollster VTsIOM shows that 1 out of 10 Russians want to leave the country.
Notably, one out of four of those questioned in the poll could name a relative or acquaintance who had moved away from Russia in recent years.
Young Russians were especially keen to move: Among those aged 18 to 24, almost one-third (31 percent) of respondents said they wanted to leave the country.
VTsIOM said that more than a quarter of those who thought of leaving had already begun preparing for the move by collecting information about the destination country. Twenty percent are learning a foreign language.
The head of research at VTsIOM, Stepan Lvov, said it would be wrong to interpret the figures as a sign Russians wanted to flee the horrible Russian reality.
It is a testament to our youths openness towards other countries, and could even be interpreted as a challenge to the outer world, he was cited as saying in an online analysis alongside the poll results.
You dont want anything to do with us? We will come to you ourselves look at your people, and show who we are.
A similar poll conducted recently by the independent Levada Center put the number of Russians considering emigration at 15 percent.
Muscovites were especially keen to move, the pollster found, with one out of five capital city residents thinking of packing their bags.
The top three destinations were Germany (16 percent), the United States (7 percent) and Spain (6 percent).

“Im guessing that you have never lived near large groups of Russians. I have. No thanks!”
I grew up in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. I watched the community go from Jews to Puerto Rican to finally Russian. It was like huge moving vans showed up one day and the next day there were no Puerto Ricans, a few Jews and the rest Russian.
Tell you what, can they party!
Something like 1/7 of Bulgaria’s population emigrated in the first decade after the Iron Curtain came down.
A commissar goes to Brezhnev and tells him that a lot of the jews are unhappy, and want to leave the USSR.
Brezhnev asks "How many jews are there?"
The commissar responds "Five million."
Brezhnev asks "And how many of those would leave if I let them?"
The commissar responds "Twenty-five million."
I’ve watched a lot of those russian dash cam videos and paid attention to everything in the video beyond what is on the road.
I’d want to emigrate too.
Instagram seems to be working like the old mail-order-bride system for Russian women these days.
Hot-looking. Also very expensive-looking.
I’m with you, only it’s Ukrainians where I live. They are the most arrogant and rude people I’ve ever encountered. It’s too early to say whether their offspring will be Americanized enough.
How does that work with Instagram?
We have a pretty good sized Russian enclave in our area. No problems I know of. At least compared to the Muslims and illegal Hispanics here who are totally undesirable.
That’s far less than the 2 out of 3 Brits who want to leave. I can’t blame the Russkies for wanting to move... it’s too cold.
I don’t know personally.
But generally they make themselves available for contacting, so I would assume that way.
We have a neighborhood in Pittsburgh that had become “ghetto Amish” and downright dangerous.
In the past few years a bunch of refugees from Nepal have moved in. They are quiet, Hindu, peaceful, and they all appear to have jobs. They have opened many small shops and restaurants, etc.
In reality an improvement over the prior residents.
