I viewed this writing as a commitment for the Church to get right with the Lord! For that to happen, priests and bishops need to search the history of exceptionally faithful leaders and then commit to act like these leaders.

Christianity is not behavior modification. It is not trying to 'act' like another person. We become a born-again Christian, a true Christian, when we 'believe in our heart and confess with our mouth that God raised Jesus from the dead...(Romans 10:9).

If the Roman Catholic church wishes to 'get right with the Lord', it should become: Living and Written Word focused! His name is Jesus!

St. Augustine wrote a whole book, City of God, to refute that claim. Actually the main cause of the fall of the Western Empire was very simple: they outsourced their national defense to foreigners.

The Empire in the East, which was just as Catholic as the West at least until 1054, endured until 1453 and never had any "Dark Ages".

Here.....Although it highlights the role of priests, there are countless interesting insights into the formidable laymen and women who also shaped the new social order. The original "institutions" of the West the book talks about are the patterns of thinking, acting and living that are original because they originate in Catholicism.

We are not called to *shape new social order* nor to alter patterns of thinking.

We are called to preach the gospel and when people are born again by the Spirit of God, then they will begin to live holy and righteous lives.

It ultimately does no good to anyone to simply improve life down here for the few short years we have on this planet when we have eternity before us.

What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own soul?
