Augustana College held an event on Monday to discuss cultural appropriation, asking them to "sign a pledge promising not to appropriate any culture."

The Office of Student Inclusion and Diversity at the Illinois school held an event at The Gerber Center for Student Life titled, “There's No Costume in Culture,” inviting students to raise their awareness of cultural appropriation on college campuses and its social consequences.

When Augustana College kicks out all the non-Europeans for appropriating Western universities I will take them seriously.

Was this plea communicated in the English language?

So I can’t appropriate a culture but they would welcome me if I called myself a chick. Got it.

It’s impossible to name a case of ‘inclusion’ that didn’t rely on exclusion.

This "cultural appropriation" meme is one of the most stupid I have seen.

Why would anyone *not* want others to adopt parts of their culture?

Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.

They reason I see for this, is to promote balkanization and identity politics.

I went to a party one time dressed in a Chewbacca outfit with my kippah and a rather old and shabby prayer shawl — i.e. Jewbacca.

Some SJWs came and accosted me for cultural appropriation.

Mind you, I am a sabra Israeli, Jewish, a weight lifter who stands well over six feet, and rather hirsute.

Oh, and my nickname in real life is “Jewbacca” because I am Jewish, hairy, big, well over six feet, and have been a Star Wars nut since about 1976.

I can’t tell you how much this crap irritates me.

The history of humanity it traveling, exploring, discovering. Meeting new people, seeing new tools, discussing new ideas. Exchanging, trading, finding something new that is interesting and using it to better yourself. Appropriating. Any successful culture or population has done this. These idiots don’t even see what they are doing is dividing us into camps and you have to stay in your camp. So much for diversity.

Impossible pledge. There is no definition of appropriation of culture.

There is no list of which cultures it is permitted to imitate.
Native American: forbidden. Scottish: allowed.

There is no list of who is exempt. Is a Black allowed to eat tacos?

Is someone with 1/1024 the genes of Incas allowed to eat maize?

Are people named Wing Li allowed to eat spaghetti? (Spaghetti was invented by the Chinese, so yes.)

Are people named Russo allowed to have a pinata?

This is just one more big trap for Whitey to fall into. No way for Whitey to avoid it. And that is its purpose - to screw Whitey, after taking his money.

Every word except “The” is a trap. You can go to jail for using a pronoun that someone has rejected. Words that were OK are turned into race-bait. There is no escape.

So Eueopean dress for those of European ancestry only, pizza for Italians only, no Pho for non Vietnamese, where do they draw the line what is their culturally approved list?

These dipshits who go on and on about cultural appropriation need to be ignored.

Sorry, that’s the first thing that popped into my head.

Does that mean student attend classes naked?

From Wikipedia:

Scientists are still debating when people started wearing clothes. Ralf Kittler, Manfred Kayser and Mark Stoneking, anthropologists at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, have conducted a genetic analysis of human body lice that suggests clothing originated quite recently, around 170,000 years ago.

The article signifies clothes were thusly misappropriated from "recent" inventors in an undisclosed location.

Enough of these half measures...Why not go all the way, Augustana?

Declare celebration of Halloween (Samhain) off limits for any student and faculty not a Celt or Druid as cultural appropriation...

Should thin that herd right quick...

Oh...it's so awful!

Last night as I was washing down some Dutch cheese with Italian wine, listening to Russian music, in an alpaca sweater from Chile and a shirt from Sweden, I paused from reading les Misérables to reflect that I really shouldn't be culturally appropriating quite so much...but...my wife looked so good lounging in that Japanese kimono I bought her, and she does love her Siamese cats...

It's all so confusing...!

I know they're right about all this, but my wife is part Irish, part English, part French, and I'm part Scandanavian, part Italian, part Scottish, part Russian... I should never have had our DNA tested! Now I don't know what to do!

An interesting twist to understand this -

The Franco regime in Spain, for several decades, actively discouraged “cultural appropriation”, that is, the adoption of foreign fashions, music, entertainment, food, etc.

Not because they wanted to protect foreigners, but because, being intensely nationalistic, they wanted to protect Spaniards FROM foreigners.

A good way to twist this appropriation silliness into a confused mess is to take a leaf from Franco. Agree and amplify, take the line that cultural appropriation is evil, and white Americans must stick to their cultural roots, and reject anything foreign or “minority”, rap for instance. Arguing against that would require the cultural left to bend itself into pretzels.

I think they’re trying to purge the English language from all culturally appropriated foreign words, but it’s a bigger challenge than they expected.
