A good reason to stay away from crowds.
Yeah really. A cruise off the Norwegian coast in March?
A loaded cruise ship near shore in choppy short seas in shallow water with loss of propulsion and hence steering is an emergency
Period
Doesnt matter if the captain hasnt raised the abandon ship bells yet
1300 passengers removal via chopper is Herculean
Anchors on such sized motor vessels are not like anchors on bass boats
They will not hold in inclement weather and they depend on ocean floor condition
A ship that size displacement will drag anchor pretty easy
Anchors are for anchorages....sheltered areas....which is why they are called anchorage
Praying.
The latest update says:The cruise ship Viking Sky has suffered engine failure in windy conditions off the Norwegian west coast. - Tom
I hope this is correct (engines running again):

Sir I agree the Master of the Ship called Mayday correctly as it was very close to the coast with Engine failure. Now with Engine running things do look encouraging. Good Luck to all !
Helicopter pickup of passengers.
If I recall correctly, cruise ships crew numbers about one crew per two passengers.
930 Passengers (fully loaded)
465 Crew (guesstimate)
1395 Persons (Total)
How many persons can be picked up in what period of time?
Here is a rate guesstimation.
Chinook = cap 60, crew of 10, evacuating at a load of 40 evacuees:
4 baskets at once,
4 minutes per person packed and lifted,
= 1 person per minute per helicopter evacuated.
With 2 Helicopters hovering at once, and a minimum of two others offloading and refueling, this is 120 persons per hour, or 11-1/2+ hours for evacuation of 1395 persons if nothing goes wrong.
As it is spring, 12 hours of daylight was available.
I am concerned.
There is also the crew, 900+ passengers, 400+ crew.

Is that Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich?
Looks like him!
Yep. It is not always the weather that is the threat. Regional conflicts affect them too.
