Authorities have had a major breakthrough in the case of a woman who was raped and strangled in New Jersey last month.
In late March, police were faced with the grim task of fishing the victim out of the waters of a lake in a Jersey City park, yet another tragic and senseless murder of an innocent person who fatefully crossed paths with a criminal predator.
It didn’t take much to determine that the doomed local woman had been the recipient of foul play.

The woman found dead in the lake in Lincoln Park is believed to have been jogging in the park Sunday morning when she was apparently strangled, a law enforcement source said Thursday.
The death of Carolina Cano, 45, of nearby Gautier Avenue in Jersey City, has been ruled a homicide by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, based on the preliminary investigation.
Cano was recovered from the water at 7:30 a.m. Sunday morning and pronounced dead at 9:30 a.m. Park workers said Thursday that divers and at least one police dog had returned to the park Wednesday, apparently searching for evidence.
The law enforcement source said that it appeared that Cano’s body was not in the water for long, and that her neck showed signs of strangulation.
After investigating the crime, police were then faced with an even more disturbing discovery: the accused perp is an illegal immigrant who had previously been deported.

The fiend busted for raping a New Jersey jogger before drowning her in a lake is an illegal immigrant from Honduras who had already been kicked out of the US twice before, authorities said Thursday.
Jorge Rios, 33, was deported from the US first in 2003 and then again in 2004, but snuck back across the border at some point after that, they said.
Surveillance video showed that Rios stalked Carolina Cano, 45, before he strangled her with a cellphone cord, raped and drowned her as she was out for an early morning jog in Jersey City’s Lincoln Park on March 24, authorities said.
And immediately after the heinous crime, he strolled over to a friend’s place — and asked him how much time he could get for murder.

The court papers painted a nightmarish picture of Cano’s last moments as her alleged killer ruthlessly hunted her down at least an hour before the 6:26 a.m. sunrise that Sunday morning.
Video showed that Rios skulked into the park at about 5:10 a.m. and was seen “milling around” the south side of the lake — the area where Cano’s body would later be found floating by Hudson County Sheriff’s officers, the court papers said.
Surveillance video then showed Rios walk back up to Lakeview Drive, where the unsuspecting Cano jogged past him.
“The male observes the victim and proceeds to walk behind her. Upon approaching the football parking lot, the victim is seen running with the male running directly behind her,” an affidavit for Rio’s arrest said.
“The male is seen continuing south, stopping, turning to look behind him towards the victim, and then running in the same direction as the victim.”
Rios confessed to the murder.
It was a rather odd way of wording it.

When they do it on our soil, it become a personal matter and newsworthy...if someone takes a crap in the Mexican jungles, nobody cares...if they start crapping on your doorstep, it becomes a whole different matter.
