INDIANAPOLIS Expect subtle changes to the competitiveness and performance level in this years 103rdIndianapolis 500, NTT IndyCar Series drivers told NBC Sports.com after last Wednesdays Open Test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
In an effort to improve racing in this years 500-Mile Race, INDYCAR officials devised a collection of aerodynamic changes last Fall. Firestone pitched in with a new tire construction for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and the Speedway itself added a sealant to the 2.5-miles of asphalt to help fill in some of the gaps and spots that have worn away since the last time the track was paved.
The complete equation was tested last Wednesday during the Indy 500 Open Test. The 30 car/driver combinations that participated in the test expected seven hours of testing, but that was severely limited because of lengthy rain delays that considerably shortened the test session.
Those drivers noticed subtle improvement to the racing package. Thats just the way INDYCAR officials wanted it.

Interesting that they could still be making changes this close to the race.
They’re going for speed.
I think they are trying to make the cars more areo sleek to make drafting less effective and recover grip from reduced downforce with the new tires and the track sealant to get more mechanical grip.
yeah, that’s just wrong...
Spec Racer Fords, only more expensive. The WWF of open wheel racing. Tony George should rot in hell for destroying open wheel racing in the United States.
The Track makes Changes right
Up until race day.
Went as a teen in 1965. Great experience. Jim Clark the winner in a Ford.
That is the opposite direction that NASCAR took at Talledega last weekend. The 9-inch rear wings let cars draft up from behind with ease.
Don’t forget the 1” Gurney Lip aka Wickerbill that was added after Friday Practice to bring speeds back down below 200mph from 202-203.
And added a hard rubber Skirt to the bottom of the Rear Balance to “stir” things up a bit.
If they really want to mess things up just switch the Race to running CLOCKWISE !!!
