IndyCar and Sonoma Raceway officials have confirmed that today's GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma will go ahead as scheduled despite the earthquake that hit the area early on Sunday morning. A 6.0 magnitude earthquake with the epicenter about six miles south of Napa woke residents and visitors about 3:20 a.m. local time. The jarring quake lasted about 25 seconds, and multiple aftershocks have been recorded. No damage was reported at the racetrack – which is located about 15 miles from the American Canyon site named as the epicenter of the quake – or its main arteries, California Highways 37 and...

These are just a few observations. I encourage other Freepers to add to this thread. I just just in the 8th grade at this time and was addicted to the race, having attended the '62 and '63 races. This event I watched on closed circuit TV at Graumann's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. Shortly into the race there was a picture that I cannot forget, a screen filled with smoke and fire in a wreck that was so bad it stopped the race and claimed the lives of two drivers. Dave McDonald drove Micky Thompson's car, which used gasoline. He lost...

INDIANAPOLIS - 'Tis the season for crime and violence. Two more shootings this weekend left two people, including a 15-year-old boy, dead. But unfortunately, the violence doesn't surprise some. It's another deadly trend going in the wrong direction. This weekend's violence started Friday night with the shooting of Michael Boyd, who was 23. It happened following a disturbance at a Shell gas station on the city's northeaRev. Charles Harrison, leader of the Ten Point Coalition, says December is typically a violent month because even criminals are trying to collect money to provide Christmas for their families.st side. Two of four submissions have now been unveiled by the companies wishing to produce the next generation of IndyCar open-wheel racers, and the most recent one is one of the most fascinating looking racecars we've ever seen. The DeltaWing submission is a radical departure from traditional open-wheeler design - in fact, the only thing you could really compare it to is the bizarre lovechild of a drag racer and a Batmobile. With its comically narrow rocketship front end, broad rear end and narrow tyres, the DeltaWing aims to outperform the current crop of IndyCars for significantly less money, while delivering...

INDIANAPOLIS — It is a basketball town, after all. Raucous Jets fans took over Indiana’s sleepy capital city this weekend, turning bars and hotel lobbies green with envy in preparation for a playoff showdown to keep their Super Bowl dreams alive. Despite the home field advantage, Indianapolis Colts fans were outnumbered – and shouted down – in more than a few local venues including a downtown hotel where public computers were adorned with Jets screensavers. “I can’t stand Jets fans,” said one barfly in a Peyton Manning jersey. “They’re so obnoxious.”

INDIANAPOLIS -- Tire troubles that plagued Sunday's Allstate 400 at the Brickyard left thousands of NASCAR fans steaming Sunday. The caution flag waved 11 times at the race -- many of them planned because of safety concerns brought about by excessive tire wear. Besides being the most radical-looking shift knob on the planet, the Gaslock Indy Cater has an energy-saving function. It tells you the exact point to shift to save gas, and if you follow its timely shifting tips, you can end up spending 15% less on fuel. It's not going to give you astonishing mileage like that 200 mpg Velozzi hybrid we showed you yesterday, but still, 15% savings might come in handy. Everybody thinks Indianapolis Colts coach and Super Bowl XLI champion Tony Dungy is a great guy. Including me. His calm, considerate approach to the violent game of football is a refreshing departure from the manic, brutal skill set of so many other coaches. Yet there is a part of Dungy's philosophy that troubles me -- and, I believe, many others -- and that is his insistence upon making proper coaching not just a matter of good heart but of religious zeal, even dogma. God, he said, was responsible for the Colts' 29-17 victory against the Bears. Indeed, in the relatively...

Danica Patrick has surged onto the open-wheel racing world, but that might not be sitting well with the old-school boss of Formula One racing. Formula One is getting its most high-profile United States presence with the U.S. Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend, but Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone doesn't seem to be too crazy about Patrick joining her male competitors on the track, despite her recent Indy 500 success. "She did a good job, didn't she? Super. Didn't think she'd be able to make it like that," Ecclestone told a gathering of reporters about Patrick's Indy 500...

ABC Sports replaced veteran Indianapolis 500 announcer Paul Page, known as the Voice of the 500, with Todd Harris in an effort to boost buzz and ratings. The network described Harris, 39, as one of the "most respected young talents" in broadcasting. Page, a 28-year broadcast veteran, told his hometown Indianapolis Star he was "terribly disappointed" by ABC's move. "I love doing the Indy 500," said Page, 59, who will handle other sports duties for ABC and ESPN. "It's all I ever really wanted to do." It was the second time ABC pulled Page from the broadcast booth. Page joined...

The city will ask lawmakers to approve pull tabs, which are slot machine-like devices, for horse racing tracks in Anderson and Shelbyville and an off-track betting parlor in Indianapolis, Peterson said at a news conference. Jeret Schroeder rockets the IndyCarTM two-seater through the gears exiting the empty pits at Nashville Superspeedway, gunning the machine all out. As a piggy back passenger along for the ride, my every instinct screams that there is no way the vehicle can possibly make it around the flat apron exit without hurtling toward an intimate and rude hello with the wall across from Turn One. And we aren’t even on the track yet. Last Thursday, preceding the weekend’s Firestone Indy 200, the visiting Indy Racing League and Nashville Superspeedway invited the media to climb into the cockpit of an IndyCar...

Celebrity watchers at this year's Indianapolis 500 will have their eyes on more than the usual gang of big names from TV, music and sports. If that gray-haired guy standing behind Wynonna Judd looks familiar, it's probably former President Bill Clinton.
