War in the Pacific History Buffs - "Dauntless" Movie Trailer, YouTube

Bayou Pictures will be releasing a movie based on the Battle at Midway.

I do not know when this great-looking movie will be released, but you should keep your eyes peeled.

Below I'm pasting the IMDB blurb:

.

By June 1942, the Japanese Navy has swept across the Pacific. In an effort to change the course of the war, a United States carrier group is positioned off the coast of Midway, tasked with springing a trap on the enemy. During this pivotal battle, the two-man crew of a U.S. Navy dive bomber is forced to ditch in the sea. Set adrift, the men look towards their comrades for rescue; namely, the ragtag crew of a PBY Catalina, who are sent to search for survivors. Amid the vast openness of the Pacific, with days passing and the chance of rescue fading, the men are forced to face their own mortality.

I got to see a Dauntless fired up and run for several minutes a few years ago at the Warhawk Museum in Nampa, Idaho.

Those are huge planes for a single-engine.

Well at least I hope they spent the budget on good catering, because it wasn’t the special effects or acting.

So in this Midway, Chuck Heston doesn’t have the annoying son?

Hal Holbrook had the best line of the movie. As a former Naval Intelligence Officer I can identify with Joe Rochefort.

Captain Garth: How much can you decipher?
Commander Rochefort: Fifteen percent.
Captain Garth: Really decipher?
Commander Rochefort : Ten percent.
Captain Garth: Ten percent? That's one word in ten, Joe! You're *guessing*!
Commander Rochefort: [slightly hurt] We like to call it "analysis."

No doubt you saw at the early stages of the war the insignia on our planes was a blue circle with a white star and a red circle in the stars center.

The Avenger was huge. The Dauntless was not very big at all.

And the Devastator was only devastating to those who flew in it. The torpedo planes at Midway paid an awful cost to keep the Zeros busy.
