I had to watch that about ten times on VHS in order to figure out how they did it. The blood comes in from the left side of the frame, the lighting is arranged so you can just barely see it. They must have blown it out of some kind of air gun.

Poor Samuel Jackson has to bury his face in it.

“Surprised they didn’t make “Shaft” a female, that seems to be the go-to for Hollywood retread flops.”

They would have had to call it “Sleeve”.

People are getting sick of Hollywood retreads.

They better start getting original or they will continue to have these major bombs in the box office.

This is a big problem, in my opinion, with Hollywood. They seem to be making remakes, which fans of the original often tell us were not as good as the original.

The all-woman Ghostbusters was a big bust. In that case, their remake to push girl power fell flat with audiences.

Then you have the whole action/adventure/superhero genre, with thin plots but dazzling computer graphics to shock and awe the audience.

And let’s not forget Disney seems to be on a quest to make live action movies out of their cartoons of the past, such as Dumbo and Aladdin and Mulan and even Lion King.

Sam needs to go public on his hatred for Trump and white people.

That will help.

My son has a theory that you can tell a society is dying when everything is a “cover” of something already done. Movies are all copies of something from the past, as is most of the music put out. I fear his theory has a lot of credence.

Late Night

Had to look it up.

I like Lithgow.

Never understood Kaling's appeal.

I used to like Thompson, but she's gone off the deep-end supporting Middle Eastern terrorists.

I find myself watching — in fact, craving — old movies. Old being anything before 1970, before everything turned left wing.

Shaft... where the son of Shaft is an MIT graduate computer nerd? Do they make any movies now without a black computer nerd? (I rewatched The Martian last night, I like it despite Matt Damon, and yes, there is a black astrophysicist computer nerd) And this is a sequel to a remake .... Originality twice removed. Hollywood? I think their self-imposed strictures of political correctness are killing any creativity.

De Niro does his tough guy schtick well, and apparently it sells - he's been very successful in doing it for a long time. The, "Analyze This," and, "Analyze That," films show that he's also conscious enough of his schtick that he's capable of pulling off some self-parody, but I think that's the extent of his play book.

When, "Raging Bull," came out way back in '80, the glitterati were all abuzz about how much weight he gained and lost for the Jake LaMotta role and that burnished his reputation as a, "dedicated actor," when the credit would have been more appropriately given to his dietician and personal trainer.

I think the best example of how limited he really is can be seen in 1986's "The Mission." Called to play something other than a 20th Century Italian tough guy from NY, he was way out of his depth and when contrasted on screen with an exceptionally talented actor like Jeremy Irons, De Niro's shortcomings become all the more obvious.

OK, here’s an idea:

Trump should use the Isaac Hayes theme from Shaft as his rally theme music.

Would melt more snowflakes than a forest fire.

I'm not so sure of that. Even in the United States' best, most thriving and vigorous eras, there were strong revivalist movements in art, architecture, literature and music...which were all "covers," of past trends.

Further, it would be hard to explain the Renaissance, which was in many ways a great hearkening back to the classical ideals of Greece and Rome. Architecture, philosophy, sculpture, literature, etc. of the period generally idealized and largely mimicked that of Greece and Rome, but western Europe was anything but "dying," at the time; to the contrary, it is generally seen as coming out of the dark ages (though that can be argued as an overly broad generalization."
