'Jeopardy!' superstar testing his gambling skills in the World Series of Poker
Fox News ^ | 23 June 2019 | David Aaro

"Jeopardy!" star James Holzhauer may have put down the buzzer, but now he's picking up his poker chips and heading to the Rio Convention Center in Las Vegas to test his luck in the World Series of Poker.

Holzhauer, 34, will participate in two events on Monday, the $1,500 buy-in No-Limit Hold'Em Super Turbo Bounty tournament and the $1,000 buy-in Tag Team No-Limit Hold’Em.

Poker isn't anything new to Holzhauer, who joked that he majored in the sport while enrolled at the University of Illinois, according to the Las Vegas Review Journal. Holzhauer says he was convinced to enter by Hall of Fame poker player and commentator, Mike Sexton.

“I decided to enter because Mike Sexton contacted me and offered to sponsor my buy-ins. I don’t have any plans to enter another WSOP event beyond those two,” Holzhauer told the Review-Journal in an email. “I played online poker semi-professionally in the early 2000s, but I don’t intend to make a career of it now, as I’m sure I wouldn’t be good enough at it to justify forgoing other opportunities.”

Holzhauer says he stopped playing online poker due to a government crackdown in 2011 and hasn't played in eight years.

So, what’s the deal? Doesn’t anybody play seven card stud anymore?

I bet he is a good gambler. Probably good at poker too.

In a lot of gambling such as roulette wheel he would not do any better than anyone else.

Since you asked, some Tournaments have smaller outlier Games like Omaha and High Low, but the Main Events are always Texas Hold ‘Em.

I think the flow and strategy of the game, especially with the two Hole Cards being shown on the Broadcast gets the viewing audience interested and involved.

Of course seeing all the Hole Cards makes people think the game is easier than it is in real life.

I’ve played many Tournaments over the years, but I never made it to the Money. Close, but no Cigar. Kind of a Horseshoes and Hand Grenades thing...

7-Stud is too complicated for TV - the ratings start off at close to zero, then quickly move to Absolute Zero.

5 card Texas Hold-em is perfect for TV and the average gambler.

Off Topic...

The Jeopardy guy's “full time” job is sports betting.

That's where most of the really smart gamblers concentrate.

The consensus is that “luck” is a much smaller factor in sports gambling than in poker.

However, sports bets also have odds, which means your income potential is much lower than it is in poker.

“5 card Texas Hold-em ...”

You mean 7-card Hold’em, 2 hole cards and 5 community cards.

Same here...played in some of the lower buy in WSOP tourney games. Some deep stack $800 and $1500 games. I’ve found that I can sit at tables with the pro’s and not be intimidated. You just need to get the cards to play. Just played a 6100 entry tourney at Ceasars early June and my buddy cashed at 491.
Funny quick story he was in line to get his cash and Daniel Negraneu was behind him and he was doing a live blog video about how he got busted out and ranting about how slow they ran the tournament....after he was done my buddy asked him if he would do a video on his phone for our home poker group. He was very gracious and funny. Good guy...

“I think the flow and strategy of the game, especially with the two Hole Cards being shown on the Broadcast gets the viewing audience interested and involved.”

Well, is hold’em as hard as stud? Is there more luck or less luck involved? (I’ve never played hold’em, though I played a lot of stud as a young man.)

“Of course seeing all the Hole Cards makes people think the game is easier than it is in real life.”

Everybody sees the same hole cards, so everybody enjoys any advantages there might be.

Hold ‘Em is perfect for TV IF we can see the hole cards.

Try watching WSOP old broadcasts. Doesn’t work without the card cam.

I have always heard it referred to as “5 card.”

If I’m wrong, well, OK.

Obviously, there are seven total cards.

“The consensus is that “luck” is a much smaller factor in sports gambling than in poker.”

The conventional wisdom pre-hold’em was that you took luck out of the game by paying attention, approximating the odds of drawing a given card, reading the opposition, and exercising good judgment.

To my uneducated eye, hold’em looks like a way to put luck back in the game.

I agree.

Showing the hole cards completely transformed the TV interest.

I can recall watching professional poker on Wide World of Sports in the 1960s!

Legendary players like Doyle Brunson and Amarillo Slim.

But - no hole cards - so, TOTALLY boring!

It was actually a little over $1,100 dollars - a number based on his daughter's birthday. Still classy - but it wasn't a million...
