A date has been set for the trial of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, 35, who could face up to 20 years in prison and millions of dollars in fines for fraud. U.S. District Court Judge Edward Davila on Friday scheduled the criminal trial for Holmes and her former deputy and ex-boyfriend, Ramesh 'Sunny' Balwani, 54, for August 4 of next year, with jury selection kicking off the week before. The pair face will face trial in federal court on charges that they lied to doctors and patients about test results and deceived investors about the finances of the now-defunct Silicon Valley blood-testing startup. The trial is expected to last three months.

Pushed to the top of the heap to prove women can do anything.

I'd give her more credit than that for creating her position. Others didn't put her there. She was a full-on psycho con woman. I think at first she might even have believed she could do what she claimed, but then just keeping the carousel going took over. She isn't completely sane, IMHO.

The book "Bad Blood" is a great read.

She seems typical, although more obsessed, of other young businesswomen who rose to high positions by a combination of luck, sponsorship, and by leveraging a thin resume, and go off the rails trying to come up with ways of staying there.

Peter Principle on steroids.

Honestly, how has this woman avoided prosecution even this long? The financial scam she perpetrated was a brazen flimflam. So many others are locked up quicker for so much less, but in modern America if you’re from an anointed class of money, political or social interest you are untouchable. Before this is over she will be a victim.

She was a Harvard Medical school fellow. She never graduated from college, never designed a working medical device.

Sure, she got all sorts of credits and accolades once the fraud got started. She even fooled George Schultz, who was no dummy, for a long time, as well as the CEO of Walgreen’s. Very persuasive.

But, she clawed her way into that position. Was she lying from the very, very beginning, or just a few years into it? Who knows.

But being a psycho can be a very powerful advantage. And, I suppose, such a person would use any benefit laying around (such as female status) to further her aims.

The question for me is, was she mostly swept along on “favor the brilliant young woman” advantage, or did she generate most of the buzz herself. Certainly, both occurred, but I think she was the prime mover, using every advantage that came her way, rather than mostly being a beneficiary of reverse bias (let’s get a woman, any woman, into this position).

This and the college admissions scandal pretty much fill my need for non-Trump news. In this case, as I see it (based on what I’ve read also), she managed to pull this off because:

1) She’s a woman.
2) She was good-looking when needed (now she’s doing the little schoolgirl look for sympathy).
3) She faked a deep voice (no one from her past remembers that voice). That is the voice of many women who broke into ‘the man’s world’, particularly in the tech side.
4) She hooked one or two big names who normally don’t invest in startups (maybe George Schultz, although that might have been later), using the above techniques.
5) Others followed, after all how could these ‘big names’ be wrong. At that point, she had her money.
6) She never disclosed her methods to them, and they, not knowing the game, never pushed her for it.

One of the articles said something like the big Venture Capitalists and Hedge Funds would have never gotten near her (and they didn’t), because of her claim that all of her work was ‘proprietary’. Those firms, even though they are lambasted on a regular basis, actually do have technically competent people (engineers, some of who are also lawyers) who know when someone is trying to mess with them.

In the end, the real hero in my book was the grandson of George Schultz, who worked there and started asking questions (and was like 25 years old). While grandad, who dumped in big bucks, said things like “I don’t really understand this stuff, but I trust her”, his grandson asked hard questions resulting in the top people there threatening to fire him for just asking. He then went to the media and it was game over.

Her impressively deep voice..?

Not even that is real.

The Never Blinking thing?

That has to be real.

This woman is utterly and totally screwed up.

Had there not been this Slavish WeNeedWomenEngineers PC culture in Silicon Valley..?

NONE of her BS would have been possible.

It’s actually NOT just her:

It’s a whole toxic culture that enabled and sustained her.

Why did she latch on to the Evans kid (Billy)? Is she so caught up in herself that she believes she won’t go to prison...and will have a long happy life with Billy? Or, does she know she’s going to lose her fortune...and needs a financial backup plan supplied by this guy? Either way, she’s playing him and he’s gonna get burned...bad.

“does she know she’s going to lose her fortune...and needs a financial backup plan supplied by this guy? Either way, she’s playing him and he’s gonna get burned...bad.”

she already lost her “fortune”, which was just a paper fortune in the first place, so indeed she’s in desperate need of a financial backup plan, and being the master sociopathic flim-flam, con-woman that she is, it wasn’t hard for her to hypnotize some uber-rich young guy who’s probably only of average intelligence and limited life-experience ...

She was the female version of Steve Jobs and others of that ilk. Will to Power for our age.

California written large.

The documentary on her is amazing.
