I believe the hymalayas will melt by 2020 before i believe that. It is Mathematically impossible, in fact. And, there isn’t a single dating method to prove the “science:. It’s more mythical than a liberal who loves limited government and rule of law.

How many 40,000 year old table tops could you make from that, and what would people pay for them -- a lot I'd guess.

You're right.

One NZD is worth about 67 cents.

Clear resin voids with ancient Kauri custom base...

Smart use of even the outside cuts, I guess at those prices you use every scrap

Every scrap? Yep! World’s most expensive toothpicks, maybe?

I’ll have to read the article, but I’m guessing it has to do with the increase in radiation from the sun affecting the tree’s growth and hence the width of the rings. Not sure if more radiation would cause the tree to grow faster or slower. (Faster???)

Lava flows will show the changes in the alignment of the iron, and ancient campfires will also show the changes as the rocks around the campfire will heat up and the iron molecules will warm up and align to magnetic north, and then when the rocks cool they will be frozen in that alignment.

What I am REALLY curious about is - what the heck are they doing there? From the little photo it looks like a HUGE expanse has been excavated - and at a depth to 27 feet? I suppose a mine of some sort? I think bauxite mines can be like this.

Now to go read the article and see how far off I am!

As soon as I saw that the link was to Newsweek (that’s still around!?) I knew it wouldn’t be much help. Other than to say they discovered it while expanding a geothermal energy facility.

Hmmm - don’t let the greenies see this photo. They’ll want to shut down geothermal energy too after seeing all that barren dirt.

Neil Peart, drummer for RUSH wrote the following regarding the drum set for their 40th Anniversary tour:

“Monsters from the Deep”

These R40 drums are a time machine that spans an incredible fifteen hundred years. Around 500 CE was the beginning of the Dark Ages in Central Europe, when the Roman Empire was crumbling and overrun by ... what sounds like a bunch of heavy-metal bands —the Visigoths, the Ostrogoths, the Vandals, the Byzantines, the Saxons, the Bulgars, the Huns.

Meanwhile, along the banks of the Olt River in present-day Romania, a mighty oak tree toppled into the water and was gradually buried in silt. Centuries, generations, and historical epochs passed, while that oak’s wood gathered supernatural density from the pressure of its airless tomb.

In 2014 that log was raised, and its wood was acquired by Drum Workshop. I tried a few prototype shells, and knew I wanted my new drums made from that log — the wood offered exceptional tonality and projection.

Through the development of DW’s “Icon” snare series, I learned about laser-cut inlay work, and we applied that technology to an update of the R30 drumset design. Each of the logos and even the red oblong frames around them (deliberately evoking Keith Moon’s “Pictures of Lily” kit, my teenage dream) are made of inlaid hardwoods. The hardware is gold-plated, as seemed appropriate for an “anniversary” tour.

Yes, we can tell a lot about the timing of these reversals, but the exciting thing about this tree is that we can now get some idea about the impact on living structures and how long these reversals take to happen.

Heh. Found an article talking about cosmic radiation and trees. It explains how cosmic rays increase Carbon 14. So, they measure the amount of C14 in each tree ring to try to locate spikes in the data due to an increase in cosmic rays.

In the below paper they saw a sharp spike and attribute it to a solar proton flare. But they do discuss that changes can occur due to the variation in our magnetic field as well.

Interesting stuff.

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-017-01698-8

Cosmic rays interact with the Earth’s atmosphere to produce 14C, which can be absorbed by trees. Therefore, rapid increases of 14C in tree rings can be used to probe previous cosmic-ray events. By this method, three 14C rapidly increasing events have been found.

Plausible causes of these events include large solar proton events, supernovae, or short gamma-ray bursts. However, due to the lack of measurements of 14C by year, the occurrence frequency of such 14C rapidly increasing events is poorly known. In addition, rapid increases may be hidden in the IntCal13 data with five-year resolution.

Here we report the result of 14C measurements using an ancient buried tree during the period between bc 3388 and 3358. We found a rapid increase of about 9‰ in the 14C content from bc 3372 to bc 3371. We suggest that this event could originate from a large solar proton event.

I guess at those prices you use every scrap.

And if those scraps are oddly shaped or colored, that's not a problem. This company wants unique, distinctive tables, each with its own story.

Interesting business.

I'm always fascinated when the various sciences (and history) overlaps. The Cascadia fault zone off the coast of Washington State was probably known about for awhile. But it wasn't until probably around 1990 that research really started on it.

A geologist noticed an ocean bay on the coast of Washington with a bunch of dead trees in the water. Then he started noticing other bays with dead trees.

He surmised (correctly) that they were there due to landslides. He contacted a tree-ring expert to see what dates the landslides had occurred. (The trees died when they sank into the salt water).

The trees all died around the same time (sometime between 1699 and 1701). In landslides all up and down the coast indicating a HUGE earthquake.

Of course this was pre-history in America. But in Japan they had been keeping records of earthquakes and tsunamis for thousands(?) of years.

Somebody else went through the historical records in Japan. They found a something called a “ghost”(?) tsunamis. A large tsunami but with no earthquake felt in Japan. They looked at the size of the wave in Japan and it fit with the amount of shift in the landslides in Washington.

Based on the speed of the tsunami in water, they ended up calculating that the Cascadia Earthquake happened at about 2100 hours on January 26, 1700!

Further studies have shown that the quake has occurred periodically over time. On average about every 500 years and greater than Magnitude 8. (So - any day now!).

They also looked at the various Indian tribe stories - they also talk about the earthquake and tsunami.

An Alaskan tribe has a story about the Snow King - rapid glaciation a LONG time ago. And now understood as not just a fable, but real life based on archaeology. But that will be saved for another day.

I had a subscription to Wired, and brought it to my doctor’s office. He looked at one of the articles and said, “They should call it ‘Weird.’” Ironic. How many of his beliefs were mocked twenty years later?

There’s a lot of information about the length of the history of quakes in Japan, but maybe Duck-duck-go isn’t the best search engine to use to get information about the instruments used to measure them. One article said that the Han Dynasty Era information from China was what inspired the Japanese to keep records. Do you have a search engine recommendation?

US Patent 6,025,810 "Hyper-Light-Speed Antenna"

The following describes, in simple terms, what the present invention actually does. The present invention takes a transmission of energy, and instead of sending it through normal time and space, it pokes a small hole into another dimension, thus, sending the energy through a place which allows transmission of energy to exceed the speed of light.

:) (Not quite on topic, but it always comes to mind in situations such as this one.)

It uses a knitting needle to poke the small hole into another dimension. Sounds like a pearl of an idea. :^)
