Is there an aviation ping list?

Wow! Pretty cool.

Yes, there should be a ping for this stuff. Love it.

I saw a video years ago of some civilians using a stripped down F104 to try and set a low altitude speed record.

The camera couldn’t swing fast enough to keep up with the plane.

Then, there was a big cloud of dust.

I thought, “That’s the end of that pilot.”

There wasn’t much left of the plane when they got to it.

And there, in the seat, was the pilot.

Nothing else much bigger than a dinner plate.

I think his leg was broken.

Amazing.

Nice . Missile with a man in it. JATO/RATO takeoff.

We sold a lot of these to the Germans. Not very maneuverable but friggin fast.

Saw a F-104 on the flight line at NAS Alameda way back in 1978.

YouTube recommended that video to me for some odd reason. After picking my jaw off the floor, I realized that in the context of the 1950s, it's not as mad as it seems. Long range cruise missiles were launched the same way. Turning a Starfighter into a manned SAM must have seemed quite logical.

CIM-10 "Bomarc" (Ramjet sustainer)

One way trip.

The aircraft has its landing gear ... mission profile certainly included return to base (if the base hasn't been nuked).

Erich Hartmann, the all time ace of aces strongly opposed the German purchase of the F-104. He said the plane was too difficult to fly for the Luftwaffe pilots of the 60s.

They were not as well trained as American pilots and sure enough they crashed a huge number of them.

I would say in answer to Erich, yes except for you the best of them were shot down in the War.

"'''they crashed a huge number of them..."

They were unaffectionately called "lawn darts" by many U.S. pilots.

Unfortunately, the FReeper that had the aviation ping list passed away a few months ago.

The standard JATO takeoff involves some runway. Here's a B47 doing it:

In the video above, the Starfighter is launching with NO runway.
