Weekly Garden Thread - September 7th-15th, 2019
September 7, 2019 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 09/07/2019 5:27:20 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

We have plans to add black water barrels, but are trying to figure out a configuration that won’t take up shelf space in there, too. Maybe on the far west end and the front corners...though south facing would be best, but those are my BEST shelves for spring seedlings. Maybe put the barrels below and the shelves higher up? We have room to go higher in there.

Now you’ve got me thinking. Always a bad sign, LOL!

I use them for gathering trash. But that sounds like a great use too.

Ha! I went ahead and threw down some of my 20 cent Wal*Mart seeds. I didn’t separate them and they are WAY too close together. I can move them tomorrow or so. Oops.

65 days minimum it says. I am sure I have 65 days. Maybe 85.

My area of Idaho is cooling, and got wet today. We put the sweet corn in the freezer today and the tomatoes are finally getting ripe. Zucchini would take over the planet if left alone. Peas got in and green beans were drilled by a frost the 20th of June. Carrots, onions, and green peppers did great. Hate to seen winter but it has to restart somewhere. Thanks for the tips, stories, and recipes. This is a great thread. Till next week “be safe all “.

Mine is over 40 years old. Still works great. Mine takes almost 24 hours and I take out the done ones periodically. I also flip them about 3 times. I used to make turkey jerky a long time ago. I can see where you have all that fresh game it would come in really handy.

My friend has her water jugs under her shelving so they really don’t take up any space at all. If you did that you might want to consider laying down some inch thick Styrofoam sheets under them to help insulate and keep the heat from just warming up the ground.

Oops looks like I have about 84 days until December 1 - at least that’s what it tells me.

Sometimes the weather isn’t too bad up until the end of November here. Guess we’ll see.

That is a LOL. I’ve been pitching a bunch of stuff in the barn and garage, project possible materials now I am sure we will not use. Also gave some to the young neighbors and what they did not want I put down on the road with a Free sign.

Must be close to fall, I feel a pumpkin coming on.
Pumpkin's kissin' cousin---sweet potatoes. Makes a lot for the work involved.

SWEET POTATO CONFECTIONS / makes 48

METHOD Melt 24 oz white chocolate (AKA almond bark) over bain of hot water. Add 10 oz sweetened coconut flakes,
cup chp nuts, cup mashed cooked sweets, 1-1/2 c grah/crumbs. Butter hands; form into balls, then roll in chp nuts or toasted coconut.

Refrigerate until cool.

“What are the dimensions of this beauty Diana?”

Are you asking about my greenhouse?

If so, it is 12’ x 10’ x 8’ I think? Not much bigger, though Beau had me bump it up one size from what I first asked for.
