Blaming Stalin for starting World War II is “the height of cynicism,” Russian President Vladimir Putin has said amid renewed discussion over the Soviet Union’s role in the conflict.
“To say that Stalin unleashed the war is the height of cynicism,” Putin said at an international conference in southern Russia on Thursday.
“It’s as if the Soviet Union attacked Germany at 4 a.m. on June 22 [1941] and not vice versa,” he told the Valdai Discussion Club.
Russia and former satellites disagree over Stalin’s role in 1939, when he clinched the Molotov-Ribbentrop non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany that paved the way for the invasion of Poland and the war. The commemoration of Soviet victory over Nazi Germany is one of the most celebrated holidays in Russia.
Tensions came to a head last month when Russia’s Foreign Ministry defended the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, tweeting that “hundreds of thousands of lives were saved” because of it.

Aside from the fact that Stalin’s pact with Hitler to partition Poland started the war . .

The Germans started it. After Japan had started it in Asia.

I recall reading an article in National Review, around 1970. In it William F. Buckley pointed out that Radio Free Europe was pushing the idea that Russia was not responsible for Katyn.
We had plenty of traitors from at least the 30s.

Stalin was certainly in the mix along with Hitler and Tojo.

All three killed millions...*many* millions.
This just my opinion. I believe Stalin wanted to eventually take over the entire world. Hitler along with Mussolini wanted the World Island West of the Urals plus North Africa.
Tojo along with the Emperor wanted all of Asia occupied by Orientals plus most of the Pacific.
I don’t think the Germans or the Japanese wanted world conquest but probably did want to be the world’s power.

Communist suck. Cant even start a war correctly. They, the communists, tried to get something for no effort. They paid a big price. After the war was over the communist killed even more just to make up for it.
i drive my relatives nuts by claiming Hitler was a pretty good guy!!
