The Tipping System Is Immoral (Leave 30%)
New York Times ^ | 10/24/2019 | David Brooks

Posted on 10/25/2019 8:31:33 AM PDT by Responsibility2nd

For most of my life I’ve been glad that America is a society that relies heavily on tipping. First, tipping allows us to reward excellent service. Second, in a world of rising economic inequality, a 30 to 50 percent tip is a small but direct way to redistribute money to those who are working hard to earn a living.

Moreover, tipping nurtures humane relationships. It encourages servers to try to establish social connection through direct eye contact and a display of warmth. Finally, most of the servers I’ve known like the tipping system. They’ve believed that by doing their job well they could earn far more than they could through a flat wage. That’s certainly what I thought as a bartender.

So over all, I’ve taken it as good news that tipping culture seems to be spreading to every cashier’s counter in the land.

Per the article: Tipping is racist, sexist and widens class divisions.

But tip 30 to 50 percent anyway.

When they start judging us for not tipping 50%, I’ll just heat up the grill and stay home.

We always tip 20-25% even if the service is bad due to unforeseen conditions, 2 other waiters call off sick and one waiter for 25 tables.

Now if the waiter screws up our order, does not return under normal conditions they get way less tip.

As usual Brooks is as fundamentaly ignorant as he is absurdly arrogant.

BEST ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE FOR AVERAGE AMERICANS SINCE THE 1960s Daive

So keep your tokenism and political bigotry in your pocket, we would rather have good jobs and growing incomes then pathetic “tips” from a self appointment Political/Media “master” class.

Understand that the advantages you enjoy are products of both your individual effort and privileges you didn’t earn. Tip accordingly.

Brooks never fails to annoy me.

” 30 to 50 percent tip “

Wat. I don’t eat out very often, but am usually at the 15% range.

For much of my adult life, I supplemented my income by working nights and weekends in bars and restaurants. Unless it is a small ‘hole in the wall’ in the middle of nowhere, I can tell you unequivocally that most waiters and bartenders make out like bandits. It was not unusual to take home $200-300. on a busy night - and these weren’t even the high end clubs.

Isn't cooking your own stuff even more of a food snob?

30-50%? Bull.

Sorry, but where I live, an inexpensive meal for my family will tally up to about 40-50. I am not leaving you $12-$25 tip for taking my order, filling my drinks, and bringing me miscellaneous requested items. Assuming you are serving 4 tables an hour on average, that would be $48-$100 an hour... and while I do appreciate good service, it is not worth that much.

If you want those kind of tips, work on your skills, and get hired at a restaurant where the typical bill is $250 a table. If you do, you will soon realize, that service expectations there are far higher than your typical restaurant.

I always tip 20% but with police waiting to take you downtown to earn 10K for the department and 10K for the lawyers and 10K for the courts, it’s better to stay home. That’s why country clubs are failing, too. Nobody can have two beers anymore without risking a ruined life and bankruptcy. Thanks MADD!

If the service is good, I tip well, the rest is a judgement call.

I do keep in mind that not everything that goes wrong is the fault of the server.

My idea: 2020 Republican National Convention. POTUS gives us our marching orders. In that 2 month window after the conventions(Sept/Oct) we leave a 20% tip at restaurants and CIRCLE the tip line, declaring our motives. At the same time POTUS can call on the lefties to leave a 25% tip. SQUARE around the tip line. Put their money where their mouth is. A waiter/waitress counts the tips and we all end up finding who cares about working people.

It must be really easy being a New York Times writer. If you can’t come up with a legitimate story, just fill in the blank below, and run with it.

______________ is racist, sexist and widens class divisions.

No way.

If the kitchen does not get the food out in less than 30 minutes, the wait staff is gonna suffer. (Little to no tip)

They don’t like it? They can go collect from the kitchen. Or the manager who failed to staff the restaurant properly.

The customer is not responsible for “unforeseen conditions”.
