The police seem to resent

Mind reader, eh?

Interesting, I hadn't heard it called that. The couple of times I've been camping in bear country in a tent I've taken my 1911 with full mags of FMJ figuring I didn't want JHP, I wanted more penetration. Thankfully unused.

I do something similar with my 12 ga that is beside my bed. The rounds alternate slug and #1 buck. I figure slug first since I'll probably have to be shooting past my dog and I wouldn't want a stray pellet to catch her. Not likely given typical indoor range and expansion patterns but... After the first round the dog is probably going to take off running anyway. ;-)

Around here and in many other states one can only discharge their firearm at an wild animal(outside of legal hunting) if human life is threatened. Guy should of said he was in fear of his friend Greg’s life.

If I'm the judge, a bear inside a human habitation is reasonable grounds to be believe that you are threatened and can act in self-defense. Even if the bear isn't predatory, it is likely to feel cornered if a human appears and defend itself aggressively.

This isn’t news, it’s isn’t an editorial - it’s chat.

News these days on FR consists of Gateway Pundit telling us all about a Tweet.

Anything remotely critical of the police is automatically chat.

Nope. If I could read their minds and they resented I wouldn't say "seem to resent".

Perhaps the somewhat more awkward phrase: "the police officer's behavior was indistinguishable from what it would have been had he resented the citizen defending his own life rather than waiting for his betters to show up shoot the bear themselves and recover what remained of his body" would have suited you better?

I agree. We had a case nearby where a 700 pound black bear was actively invading homes. A homeowner shot it in the head and didn’t kill it. Big pucker.

No more substantial.

True, but it's probably a clearer way of indicating that I'm discussing the behavior, not mind reading the intent. At least I think it would communicate that distinction to a reader with comprehension or cognitive issues.

I am surprised because real bear hunters know there is nothing better than a 45-70 loaded with flat nosed hard cast 300 or 325 gr.

3-3-, .308, etc. are not in the same league.

There’s a reason I pack my .44 magnum when I go hiking.

True, but more than one bear has been dispatched by a pistol round. Good shooting or luck?

You are correct.

What I should have added is that every gun owner who lives in an area infested with bears should own a 45-70.

They kick like an angry mule, but if a really big bear was after you, I doubt you would even notice the kick.

A Actually there is a theory developed by a guy named Taylor, now dead, who calculated that all modern ammo manufacturers distorted their products by squaring velocity in calculating their formulas for energy.

Using his formula which was identical except velocity was used only one time, a .45 colt loaded with a 300 gr Buffalo Bore, Cor-Bon or Hornaday is equal to a 45-70 in killing power and so far superior to a .308 that there is no comparison.

It makes a .270 WIN look like a toy.

Obviously the difference is in how far away the bear is from the shooter. In a self defense situation where one is at hot breath distance from death, a .45 colt loaded with hard cast is as good as a 45-70.

At hunting distances, not so good.

Limbaugh believes Taylor’s formula is much more accurate.

Nice selective edit. Context matters. From the article:

Greg was not cited for shooting the bear. He was cited for reckless endangerment and unlawful discharge of a firearm.

The cops would rather he have perished being eaten to death by a 400 pound predator than actually discharged a firearm in self defense.

God help us. It’s come to this. The cops actually filed charges against him.

When I saw Bear, hotel, and Tennessee, I immediately thought of Gatlinberg.

Same here. Been to Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge dozens of times over the years. And have seen a few bears around town, but heard lots of stories about them from the locals.

However a number of years ago there was a bear on the second floor outside deck of the motel I was staying in. It was several doors away from my room and was rummaging through a trash can in the middle of the night. Just made a mess and don't remember anyone actually seeing it.

I saw one walking through the parking lot at about 2 in the morning on another occasion at the same motel.

The formula for kinetic energy is K.E.=1/2*m*v^2. That’s what it is, regardless of what Mr. Taylor might have thought.

It sounds as though Mr. Taylor was using the formula for momentum (p=m*v), rather than kinetic energy. While momentum may indeed be a better indicator of a bullet’s “killing power”, it is not the same as kinetic energy.

Most bears I know only carry .40.

But I don’t know if they use the elevator or the stairs.

Guess it depends if the elevator seems to be running slow.
